2003 VW Passat "Oil Press, Turn Off Engine" and "STOP" Light

My Wife's 2003 VW Passat ( 4 Cylinder, 170 hp,1.8L Turbo ) on 2 occasions and only while on the Highway, will sound 3 loud beeps followed by the oil light and a light on the dash saying "STOP" alternating with the warnings "OIL PRESS, TURN OFF ENGINE" and "REPAIR MANUAL". Both times I have checked the dip stick and the oil level is fine with less than 1,000 miles since an oil change. After the first incident, her VW Dealership had it on their diagnostic machine and could not get the warnings to appear. We just returned home from a 2 hour highway trip and more than an hour from home, it happened again.

I would check the oil pressure sensor and the oil pump itself. You can take the sensor out and use a mechanical gauge to check the oil pressure. If the oil pressure is within specs, you need a new sensor, if not, you need a new pump.

It's probably due to the fact that synthetic oil hasn't been used and a new oil pump is needed. The dealership should cover this if you have backup on maintenance oil changes.

I had same issue. Took it too dealership and the screen was clogged with sludge. They dropped oil pan and drilled small holes to allow the oil pump to pick up oil and this solved the problem. I had about 170 00 miles at that time. Current at 206972 miles and still running strong.

My 2006 2.0 tdi passat keeps going in limp mode and saying emissions workshop. Can anybody help

hi mate, my 55 plate passat did the same before major problems happened. first turbo went then the oil pressure light came on and the car went into limp mode. before its too late for you and a costly bill can you do the following.
check if your car has a recall for the injector problems which vw are replacing under warenty.
second thing the guy who repaired my turbo told me that these cares have a major fault which caused the turbo to go. the fault is the oil pump failure you must adress this issue as you can get a lot of info on the discussion forms.
my car started with the same problem as you have described the pd engines have a design fault with the oil pump and shaft. this is common causing your turbo to go then the car will start showing oil pressure low please stop engine. educate your self via the forms and act quickly befor you end up with massive bills.
i hope this has helped. trust me vw know about this design fault.you need to change your chain driven oil pump to the new gear driven system which vw have modified. all vag cars have the same problems be it audi skoda vw . my car had the same problem as you have said .started off with emissions then turbo failed thats when i started to investigate this problem . the pd engines was designed by some rookie at vw.

My 2003 VW passat shakes and smells like burning oil while idle, but the temp gauge is fine. It also feels like it has to jump out of first gear while accelerating from a stop. Any ideas?

Hello,

Check the backpressure in the engine ( remove the oil fill cap when engine is running ). You should feel only a light airflow in and out of the filler cap hole. If there is really pressure, your piston rings are worn out. Rebuild the engine.
Check the compression on each cylinder and the state of the spark plugs.

2003 VW Passat Malfunction Indicator Lamp on

I have a 2003 Passat GLX V6 and i havent been experiencing this issue, however from my experience with VW, the early 2000 models of the passat that have a 1.8T 4 cylinder engine have a major issue with what has been deemed "oil sludge" you have to be careful with this engine oil wise and make sure to get the oil changed every 3,500 - 4,500 miles and make sure you get the full synthetic oils for it and the proper filters :-) the turbo that is on this model heats up the oil to extreme temperatures and if not serviced regularly you will have problems.... i hope this helps! i would have someone check it again for this issue... hopefully you get to it before it becomes costly!

Engine warning light and engine vibration 2002 VW Passat

The flashing is telling you that the engine is mis-firing, the dealer will run a test to determine the cylinder that is mis-firing, chances are it is something simple
