Are you trting to tighten the mirror glass or the mirror where it attaches to the body? I don't think glass is removable in 99. Only can try to press on glass to seat if unseated. not too hard.

  1. Remove the front door trim panel; refer to Section 501-05 .
  2. go to car-part.com for a used mirror. Page with * is cheapest seller.
  1. Remove the speaker.
    1. Remove the screws.
    1. Disconnect the electrical connector.
    1. Remove the speaker.
  1. Remove the outside rear view mirror (17682).
    1. Disconnect the power mirror wiring clips.
    1. Remove the outside rear view mirror nuts.
    1. Remove the outside rear view mirror.
      • Feed the power mirror wiring through the opening in the front door (20124).

SOURCE: 1998 SL2: driver's side wing

Hi allenwh,

Only $300.00 to fix? Wow. How much to replace? Here are some other, less expensive options and advice. First, save your money.

If it's a manual mirror (little joystick adjuster on the door), you can unscrew the trim panel and check the control rods (sort of like brake lines on a bicycle). Don't think this will be very effective though.

If it's electric, all the moving (rattling) parts are inside the mirror.

To actually get to them to make adjustments would be somewhat difficult if not destructive. Once the glass is attached, it's pretty much there forever.

An alternative to the repair would be a replacement with a twist

Call a few of your local salvage yards.
See if the have a 98 SL2 mirror in your color. Most of the more established yards have this info on computer and mirrors are something they keep an inventory of.

To replace it, you'll need to pull the door panel But you were planning on that anyhow. At least this way you aren't wondering if it's going to be fixable.

If you decide to go this route, Click on the ASK button. I'll get you through.

Bottom Line: Replace the mirror yourself with a used one. Cost should be less than $40.00

Remember: Good things happen for those who Rate!!!

SOURCE: mirror, outside drivers side vibrates, how to disassemble

At $400 it sounds like he is going to replace it, and not repair it.
Items like outside mirrors do not easily lend themself to repair.
They are pretty much go/no go items.

Taking the inside door panel off is easy.
Roll the window down.
Remove any screws holding the trim (should be by the door release lever, and possible 1 or 2 at the edge of the panel).
Also, some models have bigger screws/bolts just under the armrest, remove those also.
GM uses a plastic "christmas tree" fastner in the door panels. It is easiest if you purchase a door panel removal tool (Couple of $ at any auto parts store).
Start at the lower edge, slide the tool between the trim panel and the door, and pry up gently.
Work your way around the door (F&R edges, and the lower) until the panel is free,
Then slide the panel up (it is hooked into the window channel).

To remove the mirror, there are 3 nuts on the back side. Remove those, while someone is holding the mirror, and then pull the mirror out a little. Disconnect the wiring plug to the mirror.

This whole process shouldn't take you more then 10 to 15 minutes. People that do it all the time usually do it in 3 to 5 min. So it is a simple job.

Reinstalling it, is just the reverse of the removal.

You may want to look at aftermarket mirrors, or you may what to try a salvage yard for a replacement part if the factory replacements are too expensive.
As mentioned earlier, these are go/no go items, so there are no "instructions" on how to fix them.

SOURCE: 2002 Ford Explorer - Drivers side door lock, rear

Aside from the fuses, your drive side power door lock may be failing to work because of a bad door-lock relay system, or, alternatively, the locking switch/button, itself, is not malfunctioning and in need of replacement.

A great handyman site that specifies the above probable causes and more is the following link:

SOURCE: Driver Side Mirror

On the inside trim, you can remove screws that are by the door handle, arm rest, under door and side of door and then gently pull back on the panel as there will also be retaining clips attached and you don't want to break them. You'll need to lift the door panel upwards in order to get it off the window ledge. Then you'll need to manipulate the panel and disconnect the door handle linkage from the door handle and disconnect the wiring for your controls. Then you can access the bolts that secure the mirror onto the door

How to tighten the side mirror on a hummer H3

OK. Just to make it clear it was the mirror vibrating on the swivel not vibrating on the door. I went to the store and purchased a package of those plastic "velcro" pieces. I turned the mirror in towards the door and cut a piece of the plastic big enough to fit under the mirror so it wasn't sticking out when I slide the mirror back into place. Took the backing off the plastic velcro piece and stick it to the mirror stand under where the mirror would rotate back to normal. The plastic acted as a shim and the mirror does not shack anymore. I tried to take the plastic piece off the mirror to see if there was any screws I could tighten but it looked like the mirror swiveled around a post and could not be tightened. Any why, this did the trick. I hope this will help others.

How do I take the rear view mirror off a 2005 ford territory? it has seems to have a metal pad that the mirror slides onto. my current mirror wobbles while I drive - apparently it is a common fault?? I...

There should be a small set screw on the side of the metal pad that tightens against the mirror to keep it from wobbling. It may be loose or missing. It takes a very small allen wrench to tighten the set screw. If tightening the screw doesn't stop the wobbling, you can loosen it far enough to slide the mirror up and out of the bracket. Slide the other mirror into the bracket and tighten the set screw.

The drivers side door mirror glass(not the whole unit, just the actual mirror itself ) is loose & vibrates when driving.how/can? you tighten it up?

Either it's a cheap replacement mirror that can't be tightened. Or, the original (oe) has been hit hard enough to displace on of the plastic attachments behind the mirror. Adjust the mirror to the extreme right so you can peek behind the mirror to look for an displaced attachment. Line the 2 points up and firmly with a gloved hand, push into place until you hear it "click" into place. Good luck

Driver side mirror loose how can i tighten it

Most mirrors have a removable cover just on the inside of the door. If you look closely where the mirror meets the door on the inside should be a snap in place cover or three screw holes with snap in covers that you remove and then use a screwdriver or small socket wrench to tighten the screws or bolts.
