1995 chevy regular cab 4.3l v6 2wd wont go into overdrive

Sounds like it is stuck in second gear. Overdrive only drops rpm by a couple hundred. In third gears you should still be less than 3,000 rpm.

Second gear is a default gear when the transmission is in limp mode. Is the check engine light on? Does it shift if you manual shift through the gears with the gear selector?

VW T4 Auto - Jamming Gear Selector

be sure to check your brake switch. when this is happening, are your brake lights turning on? every vehicle has a shift lock that is enabled by the brake switch. if your lights aren't coming on during this issue. check the switch. the switch will be located at the top of the brake pedal.unfortunately on a vw, you must drop the lower shield that covers the lower dash. parts are cheap if this is the issue. totaling around 25.00

My 4r70w ****** shifts from 1st to second good but will not shift to the next gear.

If it feels like it goes between gears ,they are bad during 97 and 1998 about the one way spragg clutch locking together..You have to remove the pan ,,and you will see the metal in the pan ..Plus you can look up into the transmission and see the damage...But on a better note,,Does the o/d light flash..If so you may have a code in the transmission module..It may be just a shift solenoid..But if thats the case ,,usually if will skip a gear then go to the next..See if moving the selector to drive instead of overdrive will make a difference..

Gear shift stick moves from Park to any of the other gears, but stays in Park. It's sort of loose, as if the stick shift got disengaged from whatever other components are down below.

It did, if it is calble controlled then the cable broke from either the gear selector under the dash or on the transmission . 3 places it breaks at 1 the gear selector under the dash or the center console, connection came out or broke 2. on the transmission gear selector area there is a bushing that it connects that breaks off, 3. inside the transmission, the prawl got loose (rare but happens)

2001 kia sportage . transmission does not change

Popular Problems Checks
1. Car will not go into gear:
  • Gear selector cable has failed
  • Brake lock solenoid/brake light swtich has failed not allowing the gear selector to move out of "Park"
  • Excessively low transmission fluid (note: if car is operated for an extended amount of time with low fluid level the transmission will fail prematurely)
  • Shorted electrical component not allowing the PCM to control the transmission. Example: shorted fuse
  • Flex plate (flywheel) is broken completely not transferring engine power to the transmission.
2. Car goes into gear but then fades out of gear or is slipping while driving:
  • Transmission fluid is low
  • Transmission clutch discs or bands are worn out or burned
  • Faulty transmission shift solenoid.
3. Car goes into gear but does not shift out of first:
  • Blown fuse to the PCM controller
  • Faulty vehicle speed sensor (VSS)
  • Shorted second gear control solenoid
  • Faulty transmission controller (PCM)

trans nuetral saftey swich needs replacing
internal switch contacts are shorting together causing the PRND21 lights to move when this happens the trans ECU doesnt know what gear its in which causes clunky shifts and can lead to check engine light coming on
