If the temperature gauge isn't moving you are either completely out of coolant or your coolant isn't circulating.
It would be worth your time to check your coolant level, then look for leaks. If you are also noticing that your heater doesn't work it would help to confirm this diagnosis.
Could be several things causing a lack of circulation: a blockage in your coolant lines somewhere, your water pump is not functioning, or you have a blown head gasket or warped cylinder head. An engine overheat can also cause the blown head gasket and/or warped cylinder head as well, so you would be best served by driving your car as little as possible until you've diagnosed the problem.
If you are out of coolant, you should check a few places for leaks. Obviously at your main coolant lines, but also along the heater core is a good place to check. If you can't find any obvious leaks, you may want to try flushing your radiator, since it's relatively simple to do and certainly can't hurt. Also change your oil: if it comes out looking opaque and like a milkshake, you're getting coolant into your cylinders, which means you've blown the head gasket or warped the cylinder head.

doo a pressure test ,you might se the leak ,if not then you might have an internal leak,if you start to drive and see lots of white smoke its likely you have an internal leak.

have u replaced the thermostat? also have it checked for a leaking engine cylinder head gasket.
SOURCE: My car overheated due to a radiator hose break.
sounds like you blew a head gasket or cracked the head it will be expensive to repair. anytime you have white smoke coming out the exhaust you have water in the conbustion chamber.
SOURCE: I have a 1993 940 Volvo that is overheating and I
Hi there, I had EXACTLY the same problem, with my 92 940.
It's the intercooled 2.383, and it took a while to discover that the coolant was leaking from, what seemed like, an Enormous hole.
But I only discovered it straight away after filling it up, after a good short run.(while there was still coolant in it:)
Put stop leak in, which worked, instantly.
I speculate, that, you may have warped the head, which would indicate your loss of oil pressure.
It all depends on how overheated it got.
Not good news, I know but hope it helps.

Thanks. I will be calling my Volvo guy. I think I do have a blown head gasket. Hope it is not a warped head too. Probably the thermostat was not working since it did not go up into the red until the oil light started showing on the dash--probably that was indicating critical overheat.
I hope it is not too expensive. I am broke and this is my only car. But I will work with what I have. It has been a good car that I bought at a fair price, so I don't have complaints.
Yet. ; )
Thanks for the assistance!
