1995 chevy pickup ext.cab with 5.7 v8. Get into truck start it up,the tach.and speedometer and gear shift indicator guages will not move and gear shift indicator light will not light up. I put the truck in drive, the truck will go but will not shift to higher gear.Yet sometimes I will turn off the truck and wait a few minutes and start it up and everything is fine, tach and speed.and indicator are fine and the trans will shift but the trand shift from 1st to 2nd is hard but from 2nd to 3rd is smooth and to overdrive is smooth. I started the first time in the winter and it was everyday and only twice in the summer. I live in Michigan

SOURCE: transmision starts out in 1st

Sounds like your transmission is in limp mode. This is a fault mode in which the transmission either loses electrical power or the PCM deactivates all of the electronics. The transmission will default to max line pressure. The driver will have Reverse and 3rd, with manual 2nd available by putting the gearshift in 2 or 1 (doesn't matter). 1st, 4th, and TCC lockup will not be available. It will not hurt the car to drive it like this for short periods, but use manual 2nd to get the car moving, and be aware that the trans will generate more heat than normal while operating in limp-home mode due to increased torque converter slippage during 2nd gear starts and no lockup in 3rd gear.

The other from what you described, trans shifts 2nd to 3rd by itself in D or OD and locks the converter : ShiftA solenoid failed. Easy fix in the pan. Or a wiring problem from PCM to trans.. or PCM.

Thank you for using fixya and have your Safari scanned for the DTC codes that would indicate what issues your transmission is having to put you in to limp mode.

SOURCE: 2000 GMC Jimmy 4x4 Switch not working and Shifting hard between 1st and 2nd

Change the switch itself if it drives normal then randomally kicks into 4 lo/4 hi i had the same problem and a transmission shop told me it was the vaccum and the transfer case but one of my mechanic friends told me that it was my switch and shops only tell you other things for the money. Try changing the switch.

I have a 1995 Chevy S10 4.6L 2WD Ext Cab truck. Just replaced the transmission and have bled the system. I started the engine and I cannot shift into first gear without grinding the gears. Any suggestions...

If you can see the slave cylinder actuate, then have someone push the clutch down and watch for movement. You should see the release lever move at least a half inch. Let me know if you get movement. I also would like to know if you had the flywheel machined and if you removed, replaced, or added any shims between the ****** and engine block.

1995 GMC Surburban speedometer and tacometer work and than stop when not working will not shift out of 1st gear.

It could be a couple of differant things its a 95 so it would have some ware in the shift mechanisum witch you look at the interlock switch. That is connected to the transmission through the shift cable on the drivers side of the transmission and moves every time you move the coloum shift lever. Or it could have something to do with the vehicle speed sensor mounted on the tail stock of the tranamission witch produces a referance voltage of about 5 volts AC for the VCM . Or it could just be a bad connection in that cirrcuit for depending if you have a digital speedometer and tach. I would check the interlock switch first the shifter is binding and its a ware part . Good luck

My speedometer,Tach, Gas guage, temp guage, windows all lost.

That smoke came from some wires that shorted and melted. Take the car immediately to a shop and fix the wiring loom, it can burst into flames at any minute now.

Transmission dosnt shift when truck warms up

FYI
I have a 1995 GMC 1500 with 5.7 truck that the ABS Light comes on and then the tranny starts jumping gears and speedo goes crazy- Changed ignition switch and that did not help.
You said that you had changed the speed sensor on the tranny and that did not help ?? If so that was my next step. Let me know if you find and answer and I will do likewise.
