Engine Performance problem
1999 Chevy Tahoe V8 Four Wheel Drive Automatic 110,00 miles
Over the last month my 99 5.7 4WD
Tahoe has been giving me problems accelerating when I give it a heavy
foot. When I hit the gas down it loses acceleration almost like it's
being starved of air or gas. When I hit the gas the engines just bogs
down, begins to hesitate, and will not accelerate.
It'll drive ok if I'm light on the pedal; and the engine feels smoother than ever.
i already replaced the mass airflow sens, plugs and cables, egr
valve, distributor, and air sensor, my fuel pump is about 4 yrs old and
my fuel filter is 5 months old.
You should have your cat. checked make sure there is no restrictions in your exhaust system.
Hope this helps someone. I have a 97 Tahoe and had a similar problem. The symtoms started out slow and got worse.
I first notice it developed a jitter, like a miss when stoped at a light or i had it in park. I first started checking the MAP and MAF sensors. These were fine.
Next, the service engine light came on. Nothing changed as far a the performance though. I pluged in to find 2 codes. Random missfire on cylinder 1 and MAF sensor. I had already checked the MAF sensor, so i next thought to change out the plugs, wires and the ignition coil to clear the misslife. It didnt, and the code remained.
I thought on it for another week. When i was driving it just fell on its **** while trying to accelerate. Would die if i hit the gas hard. I could get on it slowly and be ok untill working up to a higher speed. I immediatly took it to the muffler shop to check the Cats. they were good. Only other problem could be the fuel pump. I replaced it (Just the pump).
Did ok for about 3 weeks then started everything all over again. Rechecked everything including the new codes that showed up. They were the same as last time (MAF and random missfire on cyl 1). Reluctantley i pulled the pump again thinking it was faulty from the factory. When taking it out of the pump housing i noticed something i didnt last time. when the pump is sitting in the housing, the top of it (outlet) runs into a rubber seal. then passes through the rest of the assembly. My rubber seal was ripped and torn. it wasnt fully making good contact with the upper pump. This is nessassary or you wont get good pressure and it will trick the computer to show a faulty MAF sensor. I couldnt just buy the rubber piece that i needed and had to purchase the complete assembly (including the pump).
Have had it on now for about a month and its run better than ever. I have full power returned and there is no feeling of a miss. Doesent jitter or stall and there is no codes anymore.
I hope this helped as i see many people spending lots of money for the same symptoms i had and still havent found a solution.

SOURCE: accelaration loss of power
I'd have a fuel pressure test done to be sure, it isn't fuel related again. Takes 5 or 10 minutes so cost should be minimal. The other thing that comes to mind is a plugged exhaust. (catalytic converter) Quite possible on a 10yr.old vehicle.
