'90 3.1 lumina euro idles ok but tries to stall when accelerated.

No check engine light codes. Replaced fuel filter. No difference. Used 1 can of throttle body cleaner and managed to get it to rev for maybe 2-5 minutes on it and noticed front of cat converted was cherry red so I shut it down 2 minutes to let it cool, then it went back to unable to rev. Next I replaced MAP sensor. No difference. I don't think there are any vacuum leaks. I don't think the converter is bad because symptom came suddenly. No performance issues before. I am not sure if the EGR valve, Throttle Position Sensor or Fuel Pressure Regulator should be next. I don,t have a fuel pressure tester but pressing the valve shot fuel hard.

I had recently put a bottle of Techron fuel cleaner through the system. Cat converter only red hot during high rev session with throttle body cleaner. Will recheck vac lines but had checked quite well already.

if catalytic became red hot, probably screen inside cat. is broken and causing bad exhaust flow restriction, that can occur all of a sudden! unhook cat. from motor side, try car!

recheck the vacuum lines...i use to have one of these luminas...and there was a hose that use to pop off all by itself at times..causeing it to want to stall, check near and around the throttle body andintake manifold...it was a fairly long hose

Car stalls when giving it gas. changed o2,tps,iac,map. fuel pump and filter are new. no vacume leaks

  • Anonymous Dec 01, 2011

I had the same issue with my lumina and it was also turning the cat cherry red and fumes were wafting as well. It turned out to be a bad coil pack, the fuel was getting pumped through the system and pooling in the cat, the exhaust was heating it causing the cat to heat up and smoke. changed the coil pack and it worked fine. it was also running rough as hell before that.

2001 accent Change plug distributer also Vehicle start well.drive when come speed braker accelerate it start jerking and some time off between the road. So tensed due ro this problem.

If your 2001 Hyundai Accent starts well but begins to jerk and sometimes stalls when you accelerate after slowing down for speed bumps or other reasons, it might indicate a few potential issues that need to be addressed. Here are several steps you can take to diagnose and potentially fix the problem:
  1. Check the Fuel System: Dirty or clogged fuel injectors can cause poor acceleration and engine performance. A clogged fuel filter can also lead to insufficient fuel supply to the engine, causing it to stall or jerk.
  2. Inspect the Ignition System: Since you've mentioned changing the plugs and distributor, ensure they are correctly installed and functioning. Faulty spark plugs, a bad distributor cap, rotor, or ignition wires can lead to misfires during acceleration.
  3. Air Intake System: A dirty or clogged air filter can restrict airflow to the engine, affecting its performance. Also, check for any leaks or cracks in the air intake hoses. A vacuum leak can cause the engine to run poorly, especially at idle or when accelerating.
  4. Exhaust System: A clogged catalytic converter can cause engine performance issues, including stalling and jerking, because it restricts the exhaust flow out of the engine.
  5. Check Engine Codes: If your vehicle's check engine light is on, use an OBD-II scanner to read any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) stored in the vehicle's computer. These codes can give you specific clues about what's causing the problem.
  6. Fuel Pressure: A weak fuel pump or problems with the fuel pressure regulator can result in insufficient fuel pressure, leading to engine stalling or jerking under load. Checking the fuel pressure with a fuel pressure gauge can help diagnose this issue.
  7. Transmission Issues: If your Accent is an automatic, transmission problems can sometimes mimic engine issues. Make sure the transmission fluid is at the correct level and condition. Old or burnt fluid needs to be replaced.
  8. Idle Air Control Valve (IACV): If the engine stalls at idle or when decelerating, the IACV might be dirty or faulty. This valve controls the engine's idle speed.
Given the variety of potential causes, it might be beneficial to start with the simplest and most affordable solutions first, such as checking and replacing air and fuel filters if necessary, before moving on to more complex issues. If the problem persists after you've gone through these steps, or if you're not comfortable performing them yourself, it may be best to seek the assistance of a professional mechanic who can diagnose and repair the issue.

Lexus SC430 Stalling Problem

Check the EVAP system canister purge valve, usually located on or near the canister itself which should be near the fuel tank. If the valve is clogged or stuck, it will cause excessive backpressure in the vapor return system, which sounds like what is happening here. Good luck, hope this helps.

I have a 91 chevy lumina it idles but as soon as you hit the gas it stalls

Have your fuel pressure checked. Also scan for trouble codes in the engine computer-use an OBD-1 code reader (on board diagnostics). The MAP sensor should be checked for proper operation. Run some injector cleaner through the engine for possible clogged injectors. Check your fuel filter and air filter.

it is possibly the throttle position sensor(tps) malfunctioning. basically the computer or "brain" of the car thinks the throttle is in a different position than it really is and automatically makes adjustments to fuel, air ect.... based on these false readings from the sensor thus causing the engine to react a little different when you expect to have power.

I know you mentioned the EGR valve has been replaced, but you may have a bad 'new' part. I know the car is electronic, but has anyone checked its ignition timing (timing belt been looked at, I know it only has 77k on it). Is the fuel pressure regulator OK and it vacumm supply?

1994 chevy lumina van. It will start and idle but stalls when gas

Try replacing the throttle position sensor. I had the same problem in my truck. It would start and run for a bit but as soon as you let off of the pedal, it would die. Try it and see if it works.
