I have C class 230 Kompressor that I have been told needs new front wheel bearings. I buy many of my parts on the internet and I saw that they appeared to be the old fashioned inner and outer bearing and cup set up with a seal. I have changed many of that type in Chevy's circa 1960's. I"ve been told by a mechanic that it's not that simple. He said that the flat rate book gives a time of 1.8 hours per wheel. Total cost for bearings, alignment, and labor is close to $600. I am fairly mechanical and would love to say some money, can a regular guy change the bearing himself?
You sure can! Having worked on Volvo's, BMW's, and Audi's as an independent, I feel your pain!
3.6 hours at 125 dollars per hour dealer time and shop fees equals 600 dollars.
If the inner and outer bearing race is packed properly (with recommended grease), and torqued to specification with a torque wrench, there is no reason that you cannot perform this simple repair on your own!
Be sure to buy the bearing race(s) from Mercedes (do not skimp!), and have access to the factory manual from Stuttgart.
If you go to the Mercedes .de site, you will be able to get technical dealer assistance should you need more information. They will also provide you with a wholesale distribution outlet stateside so you can buy your parts at a 15 percent discount to that offered by the dealer.
Best of skill---take care :)
