It has 82,000 miles. The dealer says it needs a remanufactured transmission. According to Consumer Reports, there has been problems with the 1998 - 2002 Odyssey transmissions. Will another year of Odyssey transmissions fit my 2001? The main problem appears when it is shifting into 2nd gear. At that point, it slips and sometimes jerks. There is also a **** when I shift into reverse.
The dealer wants $3065 to replace it since it is out of the 7 year 9 month warranty. We purchased the car 10-20-2001. Does anyone have any other ideas on what we could do rather than cuss out the dealer?

My wife and I are just resolving this same problem. You need to request a copy of Honda Service Bulletin # 02-062 which is titled "warranty extension: Accord, Odyssey, and Prelude Automatic Transmission. The warranty is for 7 years nine months or 109,000 miles. You are with in both of those aspects. Your dealer should have informed you of this and your transmission is should be completely covered with a replacement that should have an additional 1 year of warranty and 12,000 more miles. I took this issue to Honda America direct and they are in the processing of re-imbursing me for the cost of our transimssion repair.
If I were you, I would write the Honda of North America HQ. Explain the situation, and tell them of the problem, and it's effect on you as a loyal consumer.
Be sure to mention that you have owned their vehicles since the introduction of the 1978 Honda Civic CVCC. Mention that you do not believe that the goal of "ever increasing quality" has been demonstrated with this Honda Odyssee. Be sure to mention that you are about to buy a Toyota if you do not get a satisfactory repair of the lemon you have been saddled with.
The squeaky wheel gets the grease---go get some!

I have a 2000 Odyssey with the same problem. My independent Honda mechanic says a filter change will fix it, but requires tranny removal and case-splitting. This really kills me, it has to be removed completely and split open to get to the filter.
Yesterday, my problem got substantially worse. It would take off, shift out of first, but not engage second gear. It was like it popped into neutral.
It's time to quit ignoring it and get the thing fixed. Oh BTW mine has 190,000 miles on it and the tranny fluid gets changed with every other oil change.
We did contact Honda America. They did replace the tranny as we were still under their extended warranty.
Hello ajandpam,
Thank you for choosing fixya.com.
First and foremost, I must, with hesitance, ask when the last time you changed, or had the tranny fluid changed? If it has been a while, try having the tranny fluid and filter changed: while your at it, have the oil changed ; Also, have the valve cover gaskets, plugs and wires replaced. If and when you have the oil changed, have the oil pan gasket replaced as well. The tranny pan gasket will be replaced when the tranny fluid is changed.
If changing the fluid doesn't help (and you may request to have 1 quart of Lucas Oil added in place of 1 quart of oil, as well as tranny fluid. This oil is for high mileage vehicles, 75,000 miles and higher. I add this to all my vehicles.
While I understand you are trying to spend the least amount of money possible, and would rather not have to buy a new (remanufactured) transmission; this will be by far, cheaper than just assuming the dealer is correct. They may be right, however, during these hard times, remember that people will do and say almost anything to make a buck. Every industry is suffering right now, especially automotive dealers. Again, I am not saying that they are wrong, or trying to rip you off or anything like that; I'm just saying, try the simple more inexpensive alternatives first. I'm sure you'd rather loose about 100-200 bucks than over 3000, just to end up right back where you are now.
I hope this information deems useful to you, and sincerely hope you get your van running and driving properly soon. I am an owner of a minivan, a 98 Plymouth Grand Voyager SE; my second minvan I'v owned, and I can say, I've never had a problem with my transmissions in either van. The first was a 97 Dodge Caravan. I had no problem with that. I dont' have it, due to my wife getting in an accident with it, and I could not afford to pay for the damages, and my insurance would not cover it either. There was $4000 dollars in damages. I had owned the van 1 week to the day.
