1987 caprice suddenly stalled and wont start again. Been having an issue with an oil leak, but it is a know problem and we check the oil daily. could the oil pressure switch/sender be an issue?
It *was* the oil pressure switch at the top rear of the engine. Took only about 1 hr to replace as the old one shattered on removal (and was difficult to access). Car started without a problem after the replacement. It *was* the oil pressure switch at the top rear of the engine. It sounds like there could be a problem with the electrical system or fuel delivery. I suggest having a qualified technician take a look at your car to diagnose the issue and determine what needs to be done to fix it. It could be something as simple as a loose connection, or it could be something more complex such as an issue with the fuel delivery system or the ignition system.
Yes, the pick-up coil was a common cause of what you describe.
Drive along and suddenly die, but by the time help arrived it would re-start, and run for a while again, then quit again until it cooled down.
check and see if there is fluid in the trans . you didn't specify which oil you changed , I'm just suggesting that is ussually why the trans. stops working instantly
THAT PARTICULAR CODE IS CAUSED BY A CATALYTIC CONVERTER DEFECT. YOUR OIL BEING LOW SOUNDS MORE LIKE IT COULD BUT MAY NOT POSSIBLY BE YOUR STALLING PROBLEM. IF THE CAT IS STARTING TO GET CLOGGED U WILL START TO GET STALLING MORE ON THE ACCELERATOR THEN OFF. YOUR BACKPRESSURE FROM THE ENGINE NEEDS TO BE CHECKED. THEY SHOULD HAVE NEVER LET U TAKE THE VEHICLE HOME WITHOUT FINDING THE SOURCE OF YOUR OIL LEAK. THE ONLY FLUID ON THIS EARTH THAT DISAPPEARS OVER TIME IS WATER. YOUR OIL IS GOING SOMEWHERE AND IT NEEDS TO BE FIXED. SORRY TO SAY BUT U HAVE MORE THAN ONE PROBLEM. THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER ISSUE NEEDS TO BE FIXED AND YOUR OIL LEAK FOUND. SOME OF THESE DEALERS ARE CROOKS. IF YOUR CAR IS STILL STALLING ALWAYS TRY TO GO BASIC FIRST SOME OF THE SIMPLEST THINGS COULD BE CAUSING YOUR STALLING.
Do you have the idle speed turned up to keep it from dying? Because it is high. Check engine light on? Have you checked for vacuum leaks at the gasket under the throttle body? How does the car run under acceleration? You might have a worn distributor shaft.
Before you tear apart and replace the whole car like I did, you have THREE converters on that car. The front two are part of the y-pipe and one on center pipe. Vacuum check when hot or look under it in the dark after running about twenty minutes, any glowing red in converter. you need to clean or replace. vinegar and distilled water soaking, it can be done, will help clean the y-pipe one, the other is 75 bucks aftermarket and worth the change.
