Black smoke from exhaust pipe during start up

Hi Sir,

I just bought a second hand from a private sale. Now every time i start it (Toyota Camry Csi 1997 v6, 3000cc), there is black smoke coming out from exhaust pipe! but last only for 3 seconds then no more smoke, but it will happen again after a few hours of parking it.

I then did a visual check on the engine side and noticed a slight leak from beneath the rocket cover.. how do i determine the exact point of leakage?. cos the top is covered up by many other parts..

Is it serious problem?. can i just leave it alone?..cos no money to repair..

How much does it cost to repair?.. and what's to be repaired?

Thanks alot

The black smoke is not a problem, it just means that there is a rich gas mixture in the motor to start the car from cold.

This is normal with a cold engine...

Sometimes there is a seeping of oil from old rocker cover gaskets.

If the oil is not running out in a trickle. Don't worry about it...

Wipe the oil away with a rag and see if it comes back soon.

Check the oil level on the dipstick regularly and you should not have any trouble...

1990 Toyota Camry severe oil leak I can't tell where it is coming from ? What type oil and filter do I use ? The car died on me and wouldn't start had a lil bit of blk smoke coming out how do I fix it? And...

This car has issues. Where in the country do you live? What's the vehicle mileage? Most likely you'd use 5w30 but this can change based on climate and mileage.
As for the exhaust problem, need to know where it's split. These cars will go through exhaust systems, and a car of this vintage may need a catalytic converter/ front pipe converter or worse yet a pre-cat which these older cars had. Black smoke could indicate partially clogged cats or other fuel issues.
Time to get the car in for service or look for a new vehicle. The necessary repairs may not be warranted unless the car is in pristine low mileage condition.

Where can i find the cooling system sensor on my 94 camry csi? also i have an oil leak under engine driver side. maybe only 4 or 5 drips overnight

Hi.

The thermostat housing is built in with the water inlet pipe. The pictures below show the thermostat in different engines used in Camry from the same year:

black smoke when driving.(not slowing down)is an indication that the rings are shot.(engine rebuild)exhaust will smell of oil.black smoke on deceleration indicates valves stems worn.(head rebuild)

What can cause a toyota camry 2004 to smoke when

If it smokes for a few seconds when you first start it, it is likely the valve guides. Older camry's are notorious for leaking guides. I wouldn't worry about it unless it really bothers you as it is likely a costly repair.
