Chrysler Concorde 1998 dies on idle

1998 Chrysler Concorde 184,000 miles - on the way to work today, the car's speedometer quit working, it stopped shifting out of Low gear, it dies when idling. The Check Engine light also came on during my drive home this evening (3-4 miles). The fault codes of P1684, P0700 and P1685 were presented when I checked them. I don't have a chart to determine what the codes mean. Do you know what the codes mean? Also, do you have a recommendation on what I could be my problem(s)?

Your speed sensors are bad, it's best to change both, when your speedometer don't work it throws the transmission into "limp mode" safety feature. Speedometer sensor tells the transmission computer when to change. So you only have 1st and 2nd. Best to change both speedo sensors just to keep them around the same age. Do it ASAP or it will cause so many problems with your transmission, flywheel, and torque converter. Once you change the sensors check transmission fluid while cars running on flat ground. If needed add the right transmission fluid, be absolutely sure it's the right fluid. If you put the wrong one in, have it flushed, refill, then repeat that again at 100 miles

What cause the speedometer to stop working on a 1998 ford contour?

I think you should treat yourself to a new vehicle Joe. You are just chasing faults on this one! It is well past its sell by date.

The most common reasons a Ford Contour speedometer isn't working are the vehicle speed sensor (VSS), a faulty speedometer, or an electrical issue.

I have a chrysler concorde 1998 the speedo works occasionally i checked the codes with a code reader no codes were givin i checked fuses all is good any ideas?????

No generic code reader will read anything other than PCM/ECU codes, and sometimes ABS codes if you spend a little extra money.

The 1998 Chrysler Concorde also didn't have a instrument cluster that was controlled by the Body Computer. (BCM)
If your speedometer is working occasionally, then chances are that there is a intermittent short in the wiring or that one gauge is just going bad.

While you're driving or when it happens, try to pay attention to what makes it happen... Hitting bumps in the road or hitting the dash with your hand will be a sign of possible bad wiring.
If it worked when you shut the car off, and then doesn't work when you start it back up the next day could mean that the speedometer and/or instrument cluster is going bad.

Trouble getting car to idle

IAC Idle Air Control sensor is usually to blame. The MAF and TPS can effect idle also but usually IAC especially if it's erratic going up and down. If smooth idle but dies then maybe fuel pressure/pump problem or something is heating up and causing it to die. Especially a shorting sensor.

Speedometer works intermittently

It is most likely the speed sensor in the transmission.

1998 Chrysler Concorde LXI with 174K miles. 2

Problem with this is that it could be a number of things, have ur water pump checked, open the radiator and see if there is water running through it, a bad or plugged thermostat, in this case it does sound like a blown head gasket. id suggest flushing the radiator with some cleaner that u can buy at the store and check n see if ur thermostat is stuck, hope for the best and expect the worst

Ive been having trouble with my '98 chrysler concorde.it would either ''stall'' out while stopped or die out while driving.i took the car to the mechanic & they put in a cam sensor & tonight coming...

When was the last time you changed the fuel filter? when clogged, they will cause the engine to stall when stopped, or while driving. Inexpensive, if you can do it yourself, Part cost-under $15, for most cars. Won't do any harm to change it, know what I mean?
