When backing up or at stop light the car rough iddles and stalls. the mechanic said it will cost $1500 to fix. Drives fine on highway but when RPMs are low it stalls. My husband puts it in N and gives it some gas at a stop for it not to stall. Please let me know what it can be. Thanks!

sounds like distributor going.

Check the timing, PCV, fuel filter, clean out the throttle body, air intake, and check the Exhaust gas recirculation system. Valve and all.

check the spark plug wires, put water in a spray bottle and spray along the wires, especially by the coil,if the car starts to run bad or you see sparks, the wires are no good, hope this helps, Ray

try to jump the car, if it starts, and pull off one of the cable connector from the battery. if the car stop. than you need to change the starter. if the car will not start with a jump, then you have a bigger problem. the cost of repair is up to you, if you don't have other means of trasportation then, it is worth, if yu have other idea, then it is your call.

try to tune the admission up, so that it gives more gas at idle.
Here are the most common causes of idle surge, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake

Usually answered in minutes!
Our Villager 2002 started by hesitating at the red light, but then it stalled 3 times in one day, and finally that evening it didn't start. I got it jumped and took it to the mechanic. He can't find the problem.
I wish I could have answered this for you at the time you wrote it. My wife stalled and then we continued to have random die outs and the rough idle at stop lights forcing a switch to neutral and feathering the gas pedal to over 1200 rpms just to make sure she didn't stall. After thinking it was bad gas (placing 89 Octane in the tank makes the check engine light go out, but the problem (and anxiety of stop lights) continued. I finally took it in and after much debate (thinking it was a leak in the intake manifold) the mechanics cleaned the MAP sensor and now the car runs like a champ. It still reads a little shy on vacuum but I don't have to worry anymore about stopping and ultimately stalling (now it maintains a steady 750 Rpms). Before the cleaning the RPM's would start jumping from 750 to about 1200 Rpm's and you could feel a vibration in the steering wheel just before stall. Sometimes it would not restart until a full shut down and a couple minutes wait. You might be able to restart the stalled car by manually giving it gas. Clean the MAP sensor or at least have someone check it out to see if it meets specs.
