CAUTION: If the air is not purged from the power steering system correctly, premature power steering pump failure can result. The condition can occur on pre-delivery vehicles with evidence of aerated fluid or on vehicles that have had steering component repairs.
NOTE: A whine heard from the power steering pump can be caused by air in the system. The power steering purge procedure must be carried out prior to any component repair for which power steering noise complaints are accompanied by evidence of aerated fluid. Remove the power steering fluid reservoir cap. Check the fluid.
Raise the front wheels off the floor. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02 .
Tightly insert the stopper of the vacuum pump into the reservoir.
Start the engine.
Install the vacuum pump, apply vacuum and maintain maximum vacuum of 68-85 kPa (20-25 in-Hg).
CAUTION: Do not hold the steering wheel against the stops for more than 3 to 5 seconds at a time. Damage to the power steering pump can occur. Cycle the steering wheel fully from stop to stop 10 times.
Stop the engine.
Release the vacuum and remove the vacuum pump.
CAUTION: Do not overfill the reservoir. Fill the reservoir and install the reservoir cap.
Visually inspect the power steering system for leaks.
PS fluid cannot possibly leak into the engine oil. They are completely separate systems isolated from one another.
The only fluid that can leak into the engine oil is radiator coolant via a crack in the engine block or engine head or via a damaged head gasket.
On cars with automatic transmissions, there is normally also a separate circuit for cooling the transmission fluid built into the radiator. The oil from the transmission is pumped by the transmission through a second heat exchanger inside the radiator.
This is a separate system but if there is a crack in the radiator where the transmission fluid is cooled it is possible for auto transmission fluid to get into the radiator coolant via a crack in the right area. If auto transmission fluid has got into the coolant an inspection of the coolant will show it.
Is it your engine oil or power steering fluid? When parking, the steering is working more than normal so it could indicate the power steering is leaking...
This can occur when power steer fluid level low or pump/rack on the way out. Check for 'pink' oil leaks, belt tension on p/steer pump and resevoir fluid level.
what box?? gear box are described as tranny, differential and steering box. if steering is leaking check the seals at input shaft or bottom replacement is nessary but can be done pretty easy and cheap too. if leaking from hose then you looking as a hydraulic hose like $80 or so..
There is a reservoir attached to your power steering pump, which is mounted on the front of your engine. A stick gauge is attached to the reservoir cap when you remove it. Add the proper power steering oil directly into that reservoir if needed. Do not overfill, respect gauge mark.
If it's a power steering fluid leak, most probable it comes from a bad seal of your steering box pitman arm shaft. If it's the case, you can verify it, looking from under the vehicule, the bottom of your gear box will be covered of dirty oil.
However, reddish color fluid leak could also come from the cooling circuit of your automatic transmission or from the pan of your transmission. In conclusion, a visual check by under the vehicule will help to diagnose the origin.

Check fluid level of Pwr steer pump is ok.
No oil leaks should be evident on the power steer system.
Your Camry uses ATF ( Automatic Transmission Fluid). Your going to have to get the leak repaired, common cause is the high pressure hose is leaking and soon it will fail 100% and your going to lose your power steering. Worst is the ATF is flammable and if it hits a hot spot like the exhaust manifold, it will catch fire. Good luck and hope this helps, and don't let the fluid get too low. Low fluid in your steering pump will cause damage.
