check to see if there's power to the coil pack, could be a fuse, or worse a broken wire to the coil pack

I can't be 100% sure without testing the vehicle with a scanner, but just by symptoms it sounds like it is running too rich. So there are quite a few things to check that can cause this kind of situation, throttle position sensor, oxygen sensor, injectors, etc. Start with the easiest to test and less costly to replace, IE the throttle position sensor. Also, timing might be off because of a defective, worn or dirty crank position sensor/ring. The best bet would really be to get a mechanic with a real scanner to verify the data the car's computer is giving out to see if all the sensor readings are normal or not, and give you a better idea of where the problem is. Also, if you're really savvy but just don't have a scanner, you can always get a 20-30$ USB to OBD2 reader off the internet. I use one with an ELM327 based chipset and works great on any computer with win xp or better, you just to need to find good software to go with it, cause they only give you a demo on the CD that comes with it, but you can find decent stuff on the internet on the torrent side of things, is you know what i mean. :p
