1999 Mercury Mountaineer- Chattering Reverse to Drive Automatic

Hello,
Thank you for taking the time to read this post.

I have a 1999 Mercury Mountaineer 5.0L - automatic transmission with about 174,000 miles on it.
A few months ago I had to replace the front "DAYNA" drive shaft.

Now I have noticed when I back up or move forward with the wheels turned I can feel this chattering vibration until I straighten out the wheels.
The chattering is almost like a bad clutch on a standard transmission.
If I drive slowly I can hear and feel a slight snap now and then in the rear. Once I get rolling along it is fine.
Could one of you "Pro's" let me know what the problem might be ?
Any information will be very much appreciated.
Thank You.
Rick

Sounds like the u-joints in the front axle are bad or were installed incorrectly they only come into play when the wheel is turned. These are the axle ujoints not the driveshaft ujoints

2007 Mercury Mountaineer transmission solenoid problems

I don't think your transmission control got the correct start-up information, Do this. Remove one of the battery cables and touch it to the opposite terminal. So if you remove the cable from the battery pos and hold it on the neg for several seconds then reconnect and road test until the TCM learns. I hope this helps. Take Care.

When putting my '04 Mountaineer in reverse or drive, with the steering wheel turned, the car fights very hard to move. Driving straight if fine. Any ideas?

Hello, Yes, It sounds like it is in 4 Wheel drive mode. Your vehicle will not make as sharp of a turn when in 4x4. You should be in 2 wheel drive on dry pavement. If you have the other system called All Wheel Drive, yours would be binding when it should not.

Check your Range Selector for the different settings. When in 4x4, the vehicle is made to take gradual turns so you don't flip it on a hill. Sometimes people mistake the Range knob for the Fan Blower switch.

My 2002 Mercury Mountaineer is stuck in four wheel drive? Any Suggestions?

You may have to shift it out of 4x4 then reverse several feet for it to disengage.

Where is the fuel filter located on a 2004 mercury mountaineer

Hello, 2004 Mercury Mountaineer fuel filter is located in front and on top of fuel tank behind two shields. This is for 4.0L 2 wheel drive. When you look just behind the front passenger side tire you will see the first shield. Behind that is the second.

Thanks
