I was driving home on the highway in my 98 lincoln town car. i was accelerating to pass a truck and brought it up to 82mph, the transmission shifted into gear smoothly, the engine reved and i after about 5 seconds i heard a pop and a rattling/clicking noise came from under the hood. i was alarmed to hear it but kept driving to the nearest exit. the check engine light then came on and started falshing until i deccelerated and brought it down to 65mph, and the noise seemed to dim and eventually stop; the engine light went off. to test it, i brought it back up to 80mph and it began rattling again but it was alot quieter and the check engine light only flashed once. i got off the exit and drove 2 miles home, without any noise or problem; the car acted and sounded perfectly fine. i lifted the hood in my driveway and nothing was physically wrong with the engine, everything was were it should be. i even reved it up to 4000rpm and heard nothing. its not the transmission i already checked this. what could it be???
Have you checked your belts? A piece of belt may have come off and been slapping under your hood, and then fell off completely. While it was slapping, your computer would have detected the slow down of pulleys etc. and caused your engine light to come on. Then when the piece broke off, everything would be back to normal. Let me know!

The fan belt was fine, i had it running when i looked under the hood and didnt see a problem. i also noticed that when i accelerated the clicking/rattling got faster, but then it slowed when i slowed down; and it eventually quieted down the second time around. but ill def check the belts again, thank you again!
i had my friedn look at it, he is a mechanic. e found that the valve got stuck and by me accelerating i unstuck the valve. we determined this because i was extremely low on oil. so i filled it up, my friend reved the engine to the point where i thought it would explode, and it was fine, no sound whatsoever; and we re-examined the belt, everything is in order. thank you for the help!
