Chech the cam timming sound like its not set up right maybe jumped a tooth.
SOURCE: Black smoke coming from my 97 Toyota corolla
The black smoke is a sign of excessive gasoline not burning completely, there is a wide range of probabilities that may be causing this to happen my best advise would be to have it diagnosed with a scanner, otherwise you could spend a lot of money replacing "probable" malfunctioning parts till you find the one that was broken (eg: EGR valve, MAF, coils, injectors, etc.) good luck
SOURCE: interferance engine/parts sources
This engine is not an interference fit engine. The timing belt can break and not cause damage to the motor. However you never know where or when it will break and the car will not move. I believe Toyota recommends changing it every 60K.
You can probably get most of your parts online easier than at local parts stores.

The MAP sensor could be faulty or Airflow meter if it has one instead of a MAP sensor or the cold start injector on the intake manifold might be constantly powered up if your temp sensor is faulty if it is the model with the cold start injector! Disconnect it if it has and see if there's a change!
