Not sure what you're asking about, concerning the solonoid.

I'm not specifically familiar with the Chev Cavalier, but the solonoid on most cars is attached to the starter motor housing. But there are exceptions to everything... :o)

Could be the starter solenoid.
The key switch sends power to the solenoid thru the neutral safety switch. You would need to check for power on the purple wire at the solenoid when the key switch is in the start position.

Skychief2001 is correct.
There should be one wire with a small connector on it that goes to the "s" terminal on the starter (this is the trigger wire that activates the starter solenoid). All the other wires hook up with the large one. The large wire goes directly to the battery, the smaller wires are used to power various other circuits of the car and have nothing to do with the starter itself. It is just an access point for battery power.

It is positive. It gets battery feed from starter.

The starter is very easy to wire in, here is an image to help you out, and the starter should be connected like so;

1. Connection 1 should have the Pos. (+) battery cable, and all of the other wires from the wiring harness that have the large eyelet connectors on them connected to it.

2. Connection 2 should have the wire with the small eyelet connector connected to it, and the wire will be hot when the key is in the "start" position.

it could be your altenater

Sounds like the signal multi-function switch has a short it it. Get a new one.
