SOURCE: the shifter cable came loose

The end of the cable on the GM is a molded plastic piece. Part of the cable. If the plastic tab has broken off you really only have two choices.

  1. Replace the entire cable, a tough job.
  2. push the plastic end back on the arm of the trans shifter and use two zip ties in a cross patter to tighten it down. I have seen this work if done right for years.
Hope this helps.

2004 Buick Rainier transmission?

Question edited to remove the abbreviated 'transmission' word.
Question moved to model category.

Call out a Mobile Auto-Electrician. They can use a pro grade scan tool computer to diagnose all the transmission electronics, sensors, solenoids, modules and check for codes. The problem is electronics, not the transmission itself.

Car won't shift into gear

Broken cable ? Looking under the hood at transmission where shifter cable hooks , moving shifter selector , does the cable move trans detent lever ? If it does the next step would be to hook up a factory or professional scan tool an check internal mode switch input to the PCM/ECM - engine computer . Plus for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes . Your best bet mite be to have it taken to a qualified repair shop.
