2001 Oldsmobile Alero 4 cyl , Air Conditioning, compressor clutch will diss-engage. Blower fan is working, Freon psi is good, All the fuses and relays are good, Did some testing, and the compressor and clutch will work when jumped, (it blows ice cold air). We can't run it jumped, So, what is keeping the clutch from kicking in?

I apologize if my question seems stupid. I am trying to save money by looking up the solution for my problem. When the compressor was jumped, or what I call hotwired, the system blows ice cold air. So, the freon psi seems normal. What is keeping the compressor clutch form kicking in and blowing cold air when the compressor is not jumped?

Switches, fuses, wiring, relays etc. Could be anything in the circuit and it has to be systematically troubleshoorted using a wiring diagram and a test light.

  • Anonymous Aug 18, 2013

It's not fuses, or relays. So, that leaves Switches and wiring.

Or it's low on freon. Thanks for your help, We still don't know what's wrong, yet we know we are going in the right direction. (probably to a professional)

The pressure means nothing as far as the state of charge. You need to have the system completely evacuated and recharged with the specific charge weight for that vehicle. Only then can the pressures or anything else mean anything.

So, Are you saying that when the gauges are connected to the high and low pressure ports, that it doesn't matter what they say, We have to take all the Freon out and start over, in order to determine why it's blowing hot air?

Yes, that's what I 'm saying. the pressure don't mean anything at all unless the system has the exact required weight of refrigerant in the system. All diagnostice have to start with an evacuate and recharge and then analyze the pressure readings.

AC fuse and relay for 2001 Ford Expedition

Pull a relay out and use paper clip to jump. Usually cross corner. Watch compressor clutch and see if engages when key is turn ahead. Don't start car. If it does good. Now take alligator clips and check relay. Clip each wire to negative and positive battery post. Then clip negative to negative relay pin. And touch positive to correct pin. If it doesn't click do it another relay so you know your doing it right. If determined relay is good. And your compressor clutch did engage when testing it. You are low on freon.

Air conditioning problem

Air Conditioning problem
2004 Chevrolet Impala

Ac is not blowing out cold air. You have to put gages on the system and it shows its has freon.Checked all fuses and relays. The two fans in engingine compartment do not come on when the ac is turned on but does when the engine gets hot. The compressor engages when turned on also.
If the magnetic clutch engages the compressor and still no cold air could be still low in freon or the HVAC unit.

Blower motor not working all the time...if I bang the dash near the glove box, it comes on then works great. Is this the switch assembly, the resistor problem, or should I be replacing the blower motor?

Ac compressor clutch will not engage on my 98 yukon.

The most common cause of no clutch engagement is a low state of refrigerant charge in the system. Have a set of AC pressure gauges hooked up and bypass the compressor cycling switch and check the pressure on the low side charging port, you show shop 28-32 PSI at idle.

I just put in freon and now it wont give out cool air

Is the compressor engaging and did it engage before adding freon?
What is the pressure on the gauge for the low side? 25psi to 45 psi is normal when the engine is running and the compressor is turning.

If the compressor is not turning the pressure should read 75psi to 100psi, before the compressor starts turning.

Also, the radiator fan should go on when you engage the air conditioning by turning it up to max.

Air Conditioniong not working

U may be low in Freon gas.
When Freon is low there's low pressure switch that will prevent A/C compressor clutch from engaging to protect it from failure.
So, first check Freon pressure & any leaks form lines & hoses fittings.
Even if the fan is working, that doesn’t indicate proper compressor OP'S.
Look at the compressor front side you'll see the clutch stationary while the AFT pulley moving.

Then put air-condition compressor switch to ON (Engage),
You should see the clutch engage & start rotate,
If NOT, this is very clear indication u r low in Freon.

Compressor clutch does not engage--100 psi in system-

The compressor will not run without a minimum amount of R-134A. In some cases the compressor will shut itself down and require a reset (disconnect neg battery cable for 20min) prior to adding refrigerant. Best of luck with your AC issue.

Air Conditioning Problem

Check your fan. You have air flow problems. If you don't have a fan clutch look at the electrical fan problems.

Oldsmobile AC resistor location

The blower motor resister is located next to the fan under the passenger side dash. You will have to remove the glove box and plastic cover under the dash to expose the blower motor. the resister is next to the blower motor.
