My 1986 did the same thing, I droped the oil pan and found the oil pick up was almost completely clogged and the oil pan had 2" of sludge build up. I cleaned the pan and pick up, put it back together, flushed the engine with kero and now it has oil pressure and no oil lite.

SOURCE: transfer case oil change- 1999 Land Rover Discovery II
No need for a diagram, to drain the oil, there's a drain plug on the bottom of the transfer box, under the handbrake drum. To fill, the fill plug is about in line with the centre of the handbrake drum and to the left. I think both plugs are 1/2" square. Fill to overflow with Texaco Multi-Gear 75W/90R. Takes about 2L or so.

No just a sign of age. oil pump can be replaced. If you replace it before it goes out you will save the engine.
