1992 toyota camry v6 auto. can't move shifter. car starts and ste

Steering wheel turns but can't shift the car into drive. car is parked on level ground.

Turn the ignition to on(but dont start the car). Depress the brake and listen for a click. There is a shift-interlock solenoid that will keep the car from going into gear if your foot isn't on the brake. That may be bad.

That system is also activated by the brakes, so make sure the brake lights are all working and the fuse for them isn't blown. Please let me know what you find.

Car must be on and brake pedal depressed to shift. If you have no brake lights then the car doesn't know the pedal is depressed and will not shift out of park. This car has an interlock overide on the shifter console, push it and it will come out of Park. You will need a brake light switch tho.

I have a 1998 toyota camry that will not mover out of park. Ive tried putting the brake on and turning the wheel but the shifter will not move. How do I get the shifter to move?

There is a switch behind the brake pedal that allows the shifter to release out of park. Most likely that switch is bad. If the vehicle has a console shifter, look at the top of the shifter plate where you see the "DNR123" and there should be a small square plug that you can remove. Once you remove the small cover there is a button under the cover that you can depress and then you can shift the car out of "park" until your able to get it fixed. "Its called a neutral safety switch"

My 1996 Toyota Camry will not shift out of park at times. Is there anything that I can do to fix this problem before I have to take it to a mechanic? Thanks Joe

There are few things that has to be checked 1)Transmission Lockout switch on the brake pedal 2) If transmission lockout switch checked out OK , then the solenoid on the gear lever that is activated by that switch has to be checked. 3)Step on the brake pedal and see if the brake lights come on. If they don't, check the brake light fuse to see if it is blown.
If the brake lights come on, then turn the key to where the steering wheel unlocks, but no lights come on. Set the park brake and see if the shifter will shift into neutral.
If the shifter moves out of park, then you will need to check the shift interlock actuator as its not getting power when the brake pedal is depressed.
Thanks. you can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

1992 Toyota Camry won't crank

Check the ground cable going from the battery to
alternator, then to chassis. Make sure there is no
rust at the chassis ground wire terminal, and that it
is very tight. The fusible link will be off the alternator
red power cable, usually, but not 100% on that car.
Good luck.

1999 Regal GS -stalls, starting trouble, won't shift now

the batt is suspect...take it to autozone, or other place, they'll check it out free......the shifting out of park is a seperate issue, the pawl for the steering/shifter is not working properly....did you notice if the steering wheel would turn when the shifter is stuck?....probably not....when this happens try to turn the wheel back and forth-not hard but not gently- a little graphite dust sprayed in there would help.......hope this helps you out
