1992 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera 142,000 miles runs great but one problem the transmission will drop out of drive when slowing down below 5 miles an hour or stopping. Doesn't do it all the time about 50% of the time. I can put it into neutral and back into drive and it's fine, no problem any other time while driving. Changed fluids and filter. Does anyone have any ideas what could cause this?

The valve body is getting worn. There are little plastic BB's in them that wear down and start failing. Rebuild the transmission.

SOURCE: Transmission problem on 95 cutlass ciera

Overdrive has two important factors involving when and if it turns on besides being in the proper gear shift position. One is tthe car has to FIRST reach operating temps before it will engage the TCC ( torque converter clutch ). That could involve a faulty thermostat, or short distance drives, Second important factor WILL DISENGAGE WHEN STEPPING ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. A brake switch could be misadjusted , and without you stepping on the brake, the computer thinks you are and wont engage TCC. Hope this helps.

Check the prrimary and secondary resistance on your coil. Also check the resistance of the plug wires and plug gap.

My 1992 oldsmobile cutles cirra wont shift down when i come to a stop it stalls out?

If the transmission has a TCC (torque converter clutch), then the TCC solenoid could be bad. Disconnect the square four wire connector on the side of the transmission. If the problem goes away during the test drive, then the solenoid is bad and must be replaced.

What is the value on an 1988 Oldsmobile Cutlass Cierra with a rebuilt V-6 engine and less than 100k miles? Am having to decide whether to put over $1k in repairs into it and then import it into Canada with...

Being an 88 it is probably worth about 1k-1500. But if you get it running, and it lasts even one year, then the lack of a car payment would be well worth it. Your net savings could easily double what you have in it. I am driving a 1992 pontiac sunbird which granted I do all of my own work but at 300,000 miles, and nine years of service, the car owes me nothing.

The 2.8/3.1 V6 is a great engine.

1992 Olds Cuttlass Cierra stalling

Check your lockout sensor on your transmission by unpluging it and try driveing it with the sensor unpluged. It should be located on the side of the transmission between the transmission and the fan, under the air filter box.
