2004 Toyota ECHO Logo
Anonymous Posted on Aug 12, 2013

Hi. I was driving my 2004 Toyota echo on the a toll highway. I stopped at toll booth to pick up ticket and continued to drive about 5 to 10 miles to the toll pay booth. My car stalled at the toll pay booth. I was able to start the car, but it would stall. The battery light showed up on the dash. The oil light also showed up but I am not sure exactly when. I started the car about 4 or 5 times, but it stalled after ever start and before each stall, the car rumbled/shook. Then finally, I was able to start it at the toll booth, so that I could pull over to the side. And the car did not stall, so I drove on the highway for about 20 miles to my exit. Since I slowed down to go into the turn on the exit ramp, the car stalled at the end of the exit ramp. I was able to start it again and drive till I had to slow for the next right or left hand turn. I was able to get to my destination this way, restarting the car after stalling for each turn. Tried to start car , after about 4 hours. Starts, but stall immediately. It rumbles tremendously before it stalls . Any thoughts?

Non so to speak without writing a book
You just have to check for codes & start
a logical diagnostic process of testing
You input is critcal for a shop to understand the
reason your there
You do not won't a tunp-up or anything else
You only want the immediate problem diagnosed
& resolved
Becareful not all shop know a lot or can solve all issues
Be part of the solution don't just hand over the key & not
be there sometime due their work on your car
Ask questions & take notes

Testimonial: "Thanks for the feedback. The mechanic cleaned the throttle body and that solved the problem. That was a $40.00 solution. :]"

SOURCE: 1996 Camry 100 km stalling

You have one of two very common problems.
Number one may be a stuck open EGR valve
Number two would be a failing Idle Air Control valve (IAC).
Try this: Open the hood & locate the EGR valve, close to the firewall, behind the intake. Find & take with you a small hammer. The next time that it happens, open the hood & tap on the EGR valve. If it is sticking "open" the tapping may dislodge the carbon particles that are keeping it open. When the EGR valve is open, exhaust is getting into the intake at idle, and this will def stall out the car.
There is no repair to the IAC valve, it would need to be replaced if it is bad.
One of these two scenarios will cure your problem, I see it every day.

Idle is controlled through the on board computer and is not adjustable, however after u cleaned the system you need to disconnect the battery for 5 minutes and then let the system relearn the idle speed, this takes about 30 miles of driving a combination of city and highway.

Bad sounds, bad smells from 94 ford explorer

Sounds like you may have a vacuum line off or ruptured going to the EGR valve. The burning smell is probably the catalytic converter. When the engine runs rich you will get a sulfur smell that smells sort of like rotten eggs.
