1996 Ford Taurus Logo

The temperature guage in my 1996 Ford Taurus always reads over 3/4 of the way up. The car doesn't overheat. It just shows it as always running hot. I have flushed the system and put in fresh anti-freeze. I have also replaced the coolant reservoir, water pump and thermostat but still showing running hot. I am getting ready to replace the temp. sensor too. I have the thought that maybe the radiator isn't flowing well. Any other suggestions? NOTE: I have checked the whole system and there are no leaks and the vehicle is not losing any coolant...

Change the sensor. Check the electric cooling fans and Relays. Some fans have 2 speeds and may not kick into high speed.
The radiator operates more or less closely to the block temperature. A Laser thermometer would tell you what the operating temperature is.

SOURCE: ENGINE COOLANT SYSTEM NOT FUNCTIONING PROPERLY

1. Check the level you filled the coolant to...If you overfilled it this will happen. 2.  Did you add the correctly diluted antifreeze? 3. Check to be sure the radiator is unobstructed

SOURCE: temp guage keeps pegging out to high side.....

LOL, dont add to the environmental mess just yet!

have you replaced the sending unit for the gauge? its located usually in the intake manifold somewhere, or on one of the cylinder heads.

If thats not the problem, you may have a wire grounding out behind the dash.

my best advice is to try an aftermarket monitoring gauge with fresh wiring to the sending unit or sensor to check for this problem... hope this helps!

SOURCE: 1996 ford tarus location of coolant temperatue sensor?

I doubt if it is the temperature sensor if the gauge is working. Check to see if the fans are coming on when the engine is hot. The fans have two speeds and should come on in low speed and change to high speed as temperature gets hotter or when air conditioner is turned on. If they are working correctly. I would guess the radiator is partially plugged up between the air conditioner condensor and the radiator. These cars are bad about getting dirt, lint, and what ever trapped in this area.

Have you replaced the thermostat as this could be sticking and causing your problem. Also i see you have flushed the rad but you still may have a blockage get a radiator shop to check flow rate

SOURCE: 2002 ford taurus. Radiator overflows but, temp gauge not hot.

It could be both your thermostat and water pump, it could also be an air lock in your cooling system. One way or another, I think pressure is building up in part of the system because its not circulating properly.

When its cool, take the top off your reservoir, give the bottom hose to your radiator a good few squeezes, see if the water goes down a little, if it does, you moved something on and probably cured it.

If not, run the engine up, to get it warm and bleed off any air in the system. (Assuming there are bleed taps in the system)

If that also does nothing, I reckon its your water pump. And if your changing that, I'd suggest changing the thermostat at the same time.

My 1996 ford taurus is run hot

You will need to check possible clogged radiator, thermostat, temperature control switch, the water pump, and the resevoir container.

I would have a chemical test ran on the cooling system to make sure it does not have a bad head gasket as well or a warped head. How fast will it overheat, and does it only overheat while driving or even sitting there at idle?

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I'll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using Fixya, and have a nice day.

Temp guage read hot, volt guage reads low, and oil pressure guage tops out. Could this be a bad ground?

Possibly, i would check the sending unit and of course the wires that connect to the temp prob. They often become worn or even short out on other wires. I suspect that the gage is telling the truth and you have a blown head gasket. Check the oil for water. Check the water level and see if you are losing water. good luck
