4l60e reverse problem

I just rebuilt a 4l60e in a 97 GMC 2wd. When I installed it it ran great. As soon as it gets to operating temp. I loose reverse. It still shifts into reverse but won't go. I replaced the clutches, seals, steels, sun shell and planitary gears when I rebuilt it.

Is reverse the only thing you loose? 1-2-3-4 O.K

  • Anonymous Apr 05, 2009

When it gets warm and reverse stops working, put it in manual low and see if you have engine braking.

I think its happening after the rebuild. I feel that if the reverse is the issue then it's the plate that slips from when you clutch down to reverse. So make sure that you get it towed to the shop and get it checked.

1999 GMC Sierra 1500 4x4 with a 5.3 motor. My 4l60e transmission has no reverse or second gear.

Rather than swapping out, why not get the one you have repaired and rebuilt? Doing swaps with other model years only works reliably a year either way because of changes in the electronics.

No reverse only 2nd and 3rd gear in 95 silverado

Transmission needs rebuilt/replaced. Probably a 4l60E trans. if it's a 2WD---4WD could be a 4l80E. Internal damage or just worn out.

97' 4wd 4l60e work on 2004 2wd 4l60e

Sounds like you want to know if it is a direct bolt in. The answer is no. The trans for a 4WD has the shortened case and shaft to attach to the transfer case. It can be made to work, but best to do 2WD to 2WD trans.

Will the transmission from a 1998 chevy 1500 fit in my 2001 chevy 1500

The transmission in question is called, "4L60E" There are two versions. The 4L60E ran from 1992-1997. Then the 4L60E was updated and ran that version from (1996-2010). In 2002 GM introduced the 4L65E. So YES you should not have a problem fitting a 1998 chevy 1500 with a 4L60E into a 2001 Chevy 1500 with a 4L60E. You didn't mention that both were 2wd or 4wd. You can not convert a 2wd into a 4wd. I hope that helps, good luck.

1995 GMC Sierra 2wd - Speedo and tack stops functioning, intermittently. As a result trans is also malfunctioning.

Have the speed sensor checked on the transmission. I believe that truck has a 4L60E transmission in it. If so, the sensor is on the left rear of the case.

No reverse after rebuild on 4L60E Transmission from 1995 GMC Sono

There isn't a modulator on this trans as it is electronic

You can have first gear going forwrd but no reverse. It is possible. The low/ reverse clutch isn't needed to go forward.

Rebuilt the Trans.(4L60E) in my 1995 GMC Sonoma PU and after installing it I have no reverse? What went wrong? all forward gears work fine. Also seems like there is a slight whining noise in forward...

did you do the rebuild or did a shop do it? it sounds like the clutches werernt done properly. if the reverse is out the other gears will go out too if driven too far in that condition,
