The dash lights are powered by or thru the body computer. The headlight switch and dash dimmer switch signal the body computer to power the dash lights.
You may need a shop manual to get the wiring diagrams necessary to troubleshoot the circuit.

well...replace the stereo and the bulbs behind the dash. in order to do that you must pull the dash out to get behind the gauges be..carefull not to damage the ribbon of metal behind the gauges as to thats the power

I would imagine the mechanic checked the fuses, so i would say it has a bad headlight switch or the power feed to it.

check for voltage in the socket. positive is the center connection. if you have no voltage there, then you may be right. Make sure that you check the wires.

First thing to check out is the fuse box located underneath the drivers side steering wheel. Flip over the fuse box cover lid and you will find a diagram. Replace the instrument cluster fuse with the same number fuse. Next, make sure your dimmer switch is turned all the way up to MAX. If your cluster lights are still not coming on after the fuse is replaced and dimmer switch is turned up then you will need to replace the dimmer switch and/or remove the instrument cluster and replace the little light bulbs in the back of the cluster unit.
