I have a 96 chevy cavalier that starts up perfectly fine but when I put it into gear it sounds as if its in neutral, when in gear the car doesn't move so I don't think it is the trans.. I have heard that it might be the electronic shifting module but i don't know much about cars so any help would be awesome! thanks.

SOURCE: Vibration when in gear, and stalling.

The problem is the torque converter solenoid. I had it happen on my 94 Cavalier a few years back and was a cheap fix at the local car mechanic. What happens is the transmission warms up and hits a certain speed where the solenoid engages, but then it sticks and won't disengage until it cools down sufficiently. When it sticks, it causes the car to shake when slowing down and will snub out the engine if you come to a stop.

I have a 2005 chevy cavalier i was pulling up to get gas when all of a sudden my gear would not shift to park so i put hte emergency brake on and killed the car now it wont start what could be going on

The neutral safety switch will not let you crank the engine in anything but park and neutral. If something happens to the shift cable the trans may still be in drive.

My 2004 chevy cavalier won't start it is stuck in

Your shifter cable sounds like it separated from the transmission or shifter or just broke. you are probably stuck in a moving gear so the neutral safety switch is disabling the ignition.

sounds like it might be a little low on trans fluid, and if i remember correctly these vehicles dont have a trans dipstick to check fluid level, but i could be wrong..if it does check it with the car running on a level surface and in park, hope this helps

try this :
with the car in park start it, then from park move it down one. if it is reverse move it down another one, now that should be neutral, then the next one should always be drive
