89 cherokee 4.0 keeps running with ignition off. (not dieseling)
Bought it used. Someone has been butchering the wiring.
Ignition coil hot with key off, first two relays (from front of engine)energize as soon as battery hooked up. I think something is missed wired or relay is grounded when it shouldn't be.
I have the fuse block disconnected and still have power to coil.
WTF over?
Wire feeding the coil is from fuseable link on starter relay. I know that is not the correct wire to feed coil since it is hot at all times when battery is connected. What wire is supposed to feed ignition coil?Wire feeding the coil is from fuseable link on starter relay. Check your ignition modual might need to be adjusted or replaced or could be a bad wire grounding out either in at the modual harness itself or in the wireing.

prime system by switching on the ignition three times for 15 seconds each time.then operate starter maximum 30 seconds. if engine still dont start wait 5 seconds repeat the procedure.if engine does start idle rough run engine fast idle speed for one minute purge air out the lines until engine run smooth.
WHEN ENGINE KEEP RUNNING WHEN YOU TURN OFF IGNITION.THIS IS CALLED DIESELING CAUSED BY IDLE SPEED TOO HIGH.TOO MUCH CARBON BUILT UP ON PISTON HEADS AND VALVES HEADS. WHEN YOU TURN OFF ENGINE HOT SPOTS LIKE CARBON BUILT UP ON VALVE HEADS STILL HOT GLOWING.IF YOUR ENGINE HAS LEAKING FUEL INJECTORS THE DRIPPING GAS WILL IGNITE FROM THE GLOWING CARBON ON VALVE HEADS THIS WILL KEEP ENGINE RUNNING.THE ONLY THING YOU CAN DO POUR A FUEL INJECTOR CLEANER AND ENGINE CARBON REMOVER IN GAS TANK.A BOTTLE OF SEAFOAM WILL DO. SECOND OPTION IF ENGINE KEEP DIESELING.YOU PROBABLY HAVE TO REMOVE HEADS BUY A WIRE USE ON A ELECTRIC DRILL AND CLEAN CARBON OFF VALVES HEAD IN THE HEAD. IF YOU HAVE DIESEL ENGINE FUEL SHUT OFF VALVE MALFUNCTION.
The ignition of today's cars are equipped with a lot more features and will not match with the old one. What you could ask the repairman to connect only those features, and, connect only the ignition wiring. The features not present in the 1988 model, simply keep it blank(no wiring connected to those terminals. The steering lock may not engage now, but make sure that it does not get locked while driving!. Just stick to the basic control of the ignition switch, i.e. putting on the electrical circuitry and to engage the starter of the engine.....sodeep
You will need to get a really good wiring diagram like a chiltons manual, AND the proper diagrams from the company that makes the ignition. In reality, a race ignition may be cool to tell people about, but once the fire is lit, it's lit. It makes more sense to restore the original stuff that belongs in there and if you want, put a hotter ignition coil in there...that's all you need unless you are running at or above 8,000rpm with 12:1 compression!!!!! Used to build smallblock chevy and big inch top fuel engines...I know this stuff!!! good luck!!
This is most likely a faulty ignition switch, when you release the key and it cuts the engine this is a lost live feed to the coil if petrol or stop soenoid if diesel
check ignion switch for a live feed to the coil/stop solenoid when cranking
Do you have reverse lights? If not the wires go to the neutral safety switch. You may need to re-wire it to restore operation The haynes manual has a good plug diagram.
