I have a 1998 Ford Windstar. The A/C works fine, but the air only blows out of the defroster vents. It sounds like a vacuum hose to me. Where would be the first place to look? The vehicle has the rear A/C.....Heat, and with the A/C on, it only blows hot air, but Ice cold out of the defrosters. Help! Thank you.

SOURCE: 2006 Envoy SLT air suddenly stopped blowing from vents

the resister block needs changing... oddly enough i'm unsure of what fan you are saying is not working.... if it's the front.. the resister block is located on the duct work under the dash for the air... near the fan... you will see a connector going into the side of the duct work. two screws and the block comes out... should be fairly obvious for the rear one but it will be near the fan.

SOURCE: Dash vents will not blow air. Defroster and floor vents blow fine.

Is it a new vehicle? I had a new vehicle that had the same problem. Answer was that the holes weren't punched out of the vent.

1998 windstar heater blows cold air

I used to have this vehicle. There are a couple of things that can cause this. In my case there was a disconnected vacuum line that caused the air to only blow through the defrost vents. The vacuum hose beneath the passenger side cowl is probably disconnected. It is behind the engine just below the passenger side windsheild wiper.

The other possibility if all of your vents are working and the air is just cold, could be because the heater core bypass valve vacuum hose came off. Check to make sure the heater core hoses have hot coolant flowing through them when the engine is at operating temp and while running.

The last possibility for this vehicle is the actual HVAC panel with your controls on it. This panel has colored vacuumn lines connected to it that like to break off over time. The switches themselves will sometimes leak air preventing it from functioning correctly.

Hopefully this gives you some clues on where to look.

The ac on my 1998 ford ranger only blows out the defrost vent and floor vent. How do I fix it?

Almost sounds like the actuators are inop. depending on which style you have, some are electrical motors and some are vacuum. These control the mode doors which move to deflect air to various vents.

The air blows out of the defroster vents only

You have a vacuum leak, defrost is the default postion for no vacuum.
You will need to remove the wiper cowl panel
dc8ef0d.gif
1.Remove the windshield wiper pivot arms
2.Remove the screws
  1. Release the clips.
  1. Remove the windshield wiper hose.
  1. Remove the cowl top vent panel.
Then you will see the vacuum reservior.

One of the vacuum lines comes from the intake manifold and the other will go thru the firewall to the controls inside you vehicle. Check these for a leak.

Vent controls wont switch from defrost to any other selection replaced switch already I have a 2003 ford windstar, heat and cold air will only blow from the window defrost vents, any other selections...

You have a vacuum leak.Defrost is the default postion(no vacuum).
See if you can locate the small black vacuum line that goes inside the vehicle on the passenger side near the heater core. The trace it back, should see it going to a canister then to the intake manifold.Make sure it is not disconnected or broken somewhere.

No heat - ac stays on blowing through defrost vents

If you have the heater directed to the windshield, the AC will turn on. Move the control away from defrost.

Defrost blows cold air

Sounds like you have a plenum door that is not opening when you go into defrost mode. You will have to check all your vacuum hoses and switching valves under the dash to see which one is not working. Hope this helps.
