2000 montana tarter, new battery, all grounds cleaned turn key and starter clicks then clicks and u hear it spin but engine turns approx 3/4 teeth on fly wheel ???

I have had the exact same problem. There is an ignition lock that probably went off. There is a fuse box under the hood. The fuse that says ignition on it pull it out and put it back in. This should reset the ignition lock. Its a safety feature because the car thinks that someone was trying to tamper with it.

It sounds as if it could be the neutral safety switch. have you tried to start it in neutral instead of park?? If it starts in neutral just have the neutral safety switch replaced. I hope this helps.

If you have a front wheel drive and not a AWD montana, it could be a bad wheel bearing or a brake shoe that may have broken loose.
Most likely it's going to be a bad rear wheel bearing and it takes less then 2 hours to replace. You can pick up the wheel bearing at Auto Zone or Parts Source for around $170.00 and they have all the instructions for you to do thew job your self if you like.
Tool's you will need: Jack Stand Ratchet with a 1/2 socket and extention Large screw driver 5 pound hammer Lock tight
To check if it is your bearing, try shaking the van from Side to side from the wheel. Listen and feel for any play, the bearing it self is sealed and the bearing my have gone dry.
Good luck and hope this helps. Oh you do not have to remove the brakes to do this job and use the screw driver from the top to split the bearing from the brake housing after you hammer it free from the Axle.

It's when the security light starts flashing that the infamous "chip" in the key becomes a nightmare to many. Gradually the car begins not cranking anymore or if it cranks it would start and die in a second. Randomly it will do this more and more often until it won't start anymore. VATS, PASSkey and Passlock immobilizer systems are killing cars all over North America, they have a short lifespan and are certainly more effective against owners than thieves. Here is how you save your car
1st trick, Try a spare key that is newer or used less. The pins wear down and so do the keys causing security fail. 2nd trick, (if not starting) turn the key forward 2 clicks till right before it would normally start, leave like that for 10 minutes. ( no less ) After 10 minutes, turn key back then forward and your car might start. I did this in my regal for more than a year. If its shutting down while running, im sorry i have no quick fix... Cheap fix: Bypass the chip in your key. Temporary, but effective. Until the TDM (theft deterrent module) in the dash poops out, then you're kinda screwed. I was told that these types of key security systems have a 7-10 year life span. Sucks for us. This link explains the "Key Issue" pretty well.

Never worry again fix: Bypass the whole VATS/Passlock/passkey I or passkey II system entirely. Literally take it out, and throw it away. I just did this in my Regal. Took about an hour. Took longer to find the thing than it did to fix the problem. They sell a unit for 200 bucks to totally bypass this system FOREVER. life time-money back and all that. Finally did this in my car. Well worth the 200 if you've looked into getting this replaced... Anywhere from 600-1000 bucks. If you do buy this, please purchase it thru this link. 2001 civic 2nd New starter spins does not engage flywheel.

Sounds like the starter drive is not engaging. The starter drive on the starter is not engaging into the flywheel. You would be able to hear the motor on the starter it is just that the drive gear on the end of the starter is not coming out to the flywheel .

Turn key get nothing jump starter and sylenoid just spins

i cant dope out that symptoms.

does it crank or not. be clear there.

no car starts (but my 6sp) if it dont crank.

on A/T cars cranking is a first thing. so does it.?

Solenoids do not spin, the stroke only , it a linear motion.

the Sol. moves the pinion and the main contactor switch only.



my guess is the Starter spins and the crank don\'t spin,

you hear the starter motor spin up, it sings. like bird.

that means the starter /solenoid are bad. (crude)

if the battery is good and or jumper starting off a running car.



It can just be a dirty starter pinion, clean it , repeat.

fixed many for this. i have.



battery cable lugs clean, and good. no green rust.

bad cable usually just make a loud THUNK sound. no spin.

My 2000 Pontiac Montana won't start. I hear a clicking noise from the back but the starter doesn't engage

have somebody hit the starter with a hammer while somebody turns the key on the start position as he holds the key keep hitting the starter not at the solenoid at the round part if it tries to start then you have a defective starter now if you have a alarm system you are going to have tutoo isolate the starter to do a different test.

Switch is on, turn key, no signal to starter, no click no contack

COMMON CAUSES OF NO-CRANK NO-START

Low battery (Check battery voltage, recharge if low, or jump start with another vehicle or battery charger).
Loose or corroded battery cables (Inspect, clean and tighten BOTH ends of BOTH battery cables).
Bad starter relay wiring connections or ground connection (Inspect, clean, tighten wiring connections).
Bad starter relay/solenoid (Check for voltage at relay, if relay has voltage but there is no "click" when key is turned to start, replace relay).
Bad starter (Jump battery voltage direct to starter to see if it spins, or remove starter and have it bench tested at auto parts store).
Damaged starter drive or teeth on flywheel (Remove starter and inspect drive gear and flywheel teeth, replace damaged parts if necessary).
Bad ignition switch (Check to see if voltage reaches starter relay/solenoid when turn to start. If not, check for open P/N switch and brake or clutch pedal switch. Replace ignition switch if defective).
Open P/N safety switch, or open Brake Pedal Safety Switch (automatic transmission) or open Clutch Pedal Switch (manual transmission). Bypass switch with jumper wire to see if engine cranks, or use test light or voltmeter to check for voltage passing through switch when ignition is turned to start.
Engine seized due to bearing failure or internal damage (Use socket and long handle to see if engine can be turned by hand, if not engine is locked up).
Engine hydrolocked due to coolant leak from leaky head gasket (Use socket and wrench to see if engine rotates, remove spark plugs and see if coolant comes out or engine can not be cranked with plugs out).

I have a 2000 chevy malibu ls. at first..we just thought that the battery needed charged..so we bought a new battery.. then it still wouldnt start..so we bought a new starter and replaced that..and it...

DO you hear a clicking when you turn the key to start? Solenoid relay make a click sound when energized.
If the solenoid is not mounted on the starter motor then it will be near the battery
The key switch sends power to the solenoid. the solenid is a big remote controlled switch,and it takes power from the battery to the starter motor

My car does not start or turn over. The radio works and so does the fan.

When you turn the ignition key to start your car, voltage from the battery flows through the ignition switch to the Park/Neutral safety switch and/or brake pedal or clutch pedal safety switch (you have to push the pedal down before the circuit will complete) to the starter relay or solenoid. When the relay or solenoid is energized by voltage from the ignition switch circuit, it closes a contact that routes more power from the battery directly to the starter to crank the engine. The starter motor spins, pushes the starter drive gear to engage the flywheel and cranks the engine.

Low battery (Check battery voltage, recharge if low, or jump start with another vehicle or battery charger).

Engine will not turn over. lights, horn, everything else works, no clicks, no nothing, but it will not turn over.

You're describing a no rotation issue and not a no start issue correct? If you dont hear/feel the starter relay clicking, it eliminates everything in the circuit to that point meaning the ignition switch, Transmission Range Sensor (TRS) (you don't have a neutral start switch unless you have a rare manual transmission), ground input from the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to the starter relay coil, and starter relay are good. Based on what you've said that leaves the primary battery cable from the battery to the starter, and the wire from the starter relay to the starter solenoid contact on the starter. Have you checked their continuity? One more voltage to check at contact 30 (input volts from battery to starter relay contacts) on the starter relay socket. Should see 12vdc all the time.

You should check the battery. The true test is a load test. Does jumping the battery using jumper cables make any difference? If it starts, change the battery. I take it to check the starter you jumpered the solenoid contact on the starter to the battery correct? Have you tried wiggling the battery cables as you turn the key? They can corrode and fail internally. Are the engine and chassy ground connections clean and tight?

hi from uk may i suggest you recheck battery terminal leads are clean/secure? then check the negative lead from battery where it connects at the other end to the engine usually at point where engine and transmission connet? ensure this connection is also clean/secure ? also you may try this? turn engine manually by crankshaftpully half a turn if it starts ok ? without click ? you may have a bad spot of teeth at some point on ring gear on flywheel? and now and again engine stops at the point thatstarter locks on bad teeth and does not rotate hence the click ? by turning engine half turn will clear teth from starter pinion ?you may even hear/feel starter pinion free itself ?
