99 mercury villager :started with a misfire feel over a month, died after sudden sputter, restarted after a 2 hour cool down has not ran right since. Starts great, does not idle in drive, does not always stay running in N either. Bucks severely under 35mph and does some chugging after 50mph. Have replaced:plugs, distributor cap, fuel filter, and knock sensor!

I's a bad distributor. Get a Spectrum NGS 60. The cam sensor is going bad. A lot of 99-00 models have this issue.

The knock sensor is never bad and it costs @ $500 to change. Have to remove top half of engine. I suspect you need to clean the optical cam sensor under the distributor cap or change the oxygen sensor. Here is a site where we help each other with Villager Qust problems.

What do the following codes mean? PO171,PO174 and PO430. And what is best solution to eliminate them? Is it something I can handle or should I carry it to my local mechanics?

PO171 Fuel System Lean Bank 1
PO174 Fuel System Lean Bank 2
PO430 Catalyst System Low Bank 2
A new fuel filter would be a good start.

My 99 Villager has a reaccuring idle problem. After warming up and a few miles of driving the idle will sputter at a red light and sometimes stall. I recently got a tune up but the problem still remains....

Buy a 1 gallon fuel can, and when it does it again, turn it off (if it has'n yet) pour the gas inside the gas tank and try to turn it again, if it does start right away, it may be a bad fuel pump, this because after a time it gets hot and looses power, the cold gas will cool it down and make it work again... Good luck

You have a bad cam sesnor in the distributor- for certain. Rich Porter on ebay has the best reman for $200. Guaranteed fix. 99 was famous for this, runs cold for 15 mintues then acts up and quits, tach usually jumps around too.

Occasionally my 99 Sable won't restart till after 3/4 hour wait

There is a condition called thermal breakdown in ignition parts( ie: spark control modules). Pretty common really in older stuff. Why does it happen only after shutdown? because of a condition called heat soak. underhood temps rise higher than ever right after shutdown. Your ignition module is mounted to the side of the distributor. If practical when the problem happens pour cold water on the module give it one minute and see if it starts(wont damage it) if it starts right up you proved it bad. Hope I helped Thanks
