Car hesitates to start, then starts. What's wrong?

if your engine light is on you can stop at most any auto parts and they will plug into it free and let u know exactly the problem is most hesitations start with simple solutions if u get them soon there r many things which will cause hesitation dirty air filter number 1 cause alto if i was u i would take the guess work out swing into a autozone oreillys napa any 1 of those will plug into it get the code and tell u what is wrong and clear it for u too

Hesitates after refueling, have someone check the FPR, Fuel Pump and Filter.
If you have junk in the tank, it will circulate when you add fuel to the system.

Check your fuses first under the hood and under the dash. Better hope they blew before you did major damage. If you find the ones that blew check what they ran and start checking out your electrical system in that area.Hope whatever started burning was just hot wires and not a ruined electrical system. If there is extra stereos wires or security systems installed (not factory) check that area and if possible disconnect them that may take care of the problem

I suspect the fuel level sensor is wrong and you are really starting to run out of gas. The other reason would be a broken tank baffle that keeps fuel around the inlet to the electric fuel pump inside the fuel tank.

Check the EGR valve to see what is wrong.

Read and write down OBD codes . Flick ignition key back and forth quickly 3 times from on to off and write down all the codes dispalyed on the odometer. google make model OBD codes on net and find out what is wrong with your car.

The fuel filter should be changed first.
The engine fuel pressure over night is bleeding down into the fuel tank. I would suggest a tune up . If the condition continues after a tune up. The fuel pump is starting to go. You should then have a mechanic check out the fuel system and have the vehicle diagnose.

something else is wrong with the car now,. the battery took care of the starting problem but you may want to have the alternator looked at as well. but what its doing now is a separate issue
