There is two possible reasons for the pump to spin the wrong direction.
Before you took the pump back off what side of the belt was spinning the pulley? Was it the ribbed side or the smooth side? The pulley should match up to the belt, (ribbed to ribbed or smooth to smooth).
It could also be that it's the wrong pump for that engine. Not all water pumps spin in the same direction. Check the pump you have is the correct one for your engine.
First I'd check your water levels and top up if required. Then check for leaks. If all is good so far I'd look at your water pump to make sure water is circulating. So check the belts for the correct tension and check the pump for any leaks coming from it. Leaks can be a sign of a worn pump. Check the thermostat next to see if it opens at the correct temperature or remove it altogether. Hope this helps. Just don't drive to much on an overheating car as the can warp the cylinder head which is a much more expensive issue to put right.
has the thermostat been changed lately? did the fluid leakage start about that time? check the thermostat housing and the heater hoses. i would also check that the correct gasket was used on the water pump. it is not unheard of to get the wrong gasket with the water pump. they may look right but a small difference can make all the difference. is it the correct water pump? are all the bolts on the water pump tightened properly?
Who did the job? If you did it it privately, possible you did not do the whole job. You have to bleed the system for air comes out of the cooling system, also check if the timing belt is correct fitted.And last check if the cooling fan is working.
checked water pump for circulating the coolant? checked the radiator if the coolant circulated correctly? thermostat renewed? thermo switch checked whether is working? fan switch checked whether is working? checked whether the matrix could circulate the coolant? ckecked whether there is any valve on the matrix hoses and is working? have you bled the cooling system ? have you checked whether you have a cylinder head gasket with problem and pressurized the water? checked whether have a cracked cylinder head and on accelaration expanded the water hoses? have you checked whether the radiator cap is working ok? have you checked whether the radiator cap is with the correct pressure for the cooling system? checked whether the cooling fan is working?
it sounds like either your head gasket has gone or your water pump is not working correctly. try taking off your radiator / expansion tank cap and turning over engine, if the water is pushed out of the tank your engine is pressurising, a sign of blown head gasket. to check the water pump is not as easy. check to see if the radiator is getting hot and fan cutting in.
first thing to check is to make sure that your antifreeze to water ratio is the correct mix. also check to make sure that your thermostat is good and working properly ( opening at the right temp ).
could also be a bad water pump or a slipping water pump belt.
Problem is not your radiator--unfortunate for you. It's more likely the water pump. The water pump pumps the water around through your radiator to be cooled and then through the engine block to cool your motor. Before you go tearing the water pump out though, you may want to check to see if your fan belt is in good condition and working properly because the water pump works off of the fan belt turning the pulley to pump the water around. If the fan belt is off that pulley, it may need to be put back on or re-routed correctly to start pumping the water.
Then if that is not your problem, the water pump will probably need to be replaced. I believe it can be accessed from underneath the engine compartment, but first you will have to take the tension off the fan belt and remove the belt, then loosen the bolts around the front of the water pump. Put a catch pan under the car though because all your water/antifreeze will come gushing out. That water pump should be available at your local AutoZone or another auto parts store for around $100.
You have to check the following checks to see if the fan works if you have clucht fan to work properly, check if the thermostat works fine, check that the recirculating water pump antifreze well, make sure the radiator is not blocked, and that the radiator capthis, if everything is correct you head cilynder problem.
