2001 Chevy S10 4x4 Transmission Problems

While accelerating onto the highway my S10 Pickup 4L60E transmission unexpectedly quit working completely and will not move at all. No previous problems or indications of trouble prior to this. Fluid levels are good and not burned. Any advice on possible simple solutions to check? Or maybe best to replace with a good used tranny.
Thank you in advance.

Bill

I have hooked scanner to this vehicle and no trouble codes are stored. Also I have dropped the transmission pan and no metal or shavings.

dtrannyman, Thank you for the response!
I jacked the vehicle up and with trans in park can turn the rear wheels in opposite directions and driveshaft will not move. Put tranny in nuetral then back to park and can hear parking pawl engage when I turn the drive shaft. Also it will not move in either 2wd or 4wd. I wonder maybe if I have transfer case problems.

I am beginning to think the pump may be bad. I put in new filter and fluid and it still was the same problem. I then unhooked a line from the cooler and started the engine and have a very weak flow. I am not very knowledgeable on automatic transmissions, is the pump hard to change or am I better to replace entire transmission.

    Thanks
    Bill

    dtrannyman, Thanks for the replies.
The flow of fluid out of the line is nowhere near 1 quart/15 seconds.

Also I noticed there isn't any change in fluid level between engine stopped and running. There is a slight decrease in rpms while going through the gears. I guess I am down to removing the tranny and investigating further. Sounds like fun.

    dtrannyman, You are a genius.
Boy is my face red! After reading your last post I decided to drop the pan once more and found the filter laying in the bottom. Put in new seal, put pan back on, filled with fluid and now it is working like a champ. You have saved me a ton of time and money.
    Thank you very much.

Does it still have park? If not, check the differential. It is very unusual for a 4L60E to just completely quit - especially if it is clean.

In my experience, if the trans locks in park and the driveshaft doesn't rotate, the transfer case is good. I am not sure if i have ever had a problem with one of those. The 4L60E trans I work on all the time. 1/2 of my business is that trans

Pull the pan and see what you find. I believe you will find debris in this case

  • Anonymous Apr 03, 2009

silly me, you did that already!

  • Anonymous Apr 03, 2009

A general rule of thumb in 1 quart of oil per 15 seconds out the cooler lines. If not that much or close to it, then you may be right on the pump. I have to admit, I can't recall a 4L60 E doing absolutely nothing and be clean as well. Usually there is movement somewhere

If the pump is bad, the trans still needs to come out. THATS the hard part

  • Anonymous Apr 04, 2009

Sounds like a pump. Your right, generally the oil level will be higher when the engine is off - it will actually climb higher in level the longer the vehicle sits. When running it should pump the system full and lower to normal levels on the stick.

Honestly, I haven't seen a pump in one these just quit unless the pump rotor were to break. It isn't common at all. Many other issues. Before you pull it - it won't be fun - check to be sure the filter isn't cracked or something or the seal where the filter neck slides into the pump, check that to to sure it is good. I've seen one or the other bad already and then the pump is sucking air and the trans slips really bad.

Will the transmission from a 1998 chevy 1500 fit in my 2001 chevy 1500

The transmission in question is called, "4L60E" There are two versions. The 4L60E ran from 1992-1997. Then the 4L60E was updated and ran that version from (1996-2010). In 2002 GM introduced the 4L65E. So YES you should not have a problem fitting a 1998 chevy 1500 with a 4L60E into a 2001 Chevy 1500 with a 4L60E. You didn't mention that both were 2wd or 4wd. You can not convert a 2wd into a 4wd. I hope that helps, good luck.

Transmission Died

4L60E, it probably is out. The fluid isn't always a sure fire way to tell. A look in the pan can tell much more.

1997 Chevy pickup

It is a very common issue If you have a 4L60E, you may have a problem with the valve body. As the valves bores get worn hydraulic pressure is compromised, there are fixes out there for this transmission, check out www.sonnax.com they have many parts to help resolve the transmission of these problems. Also you should check or replace your separator plate as sometimes the check balls that regulate the hydraulics of the transmission become stuck onto the plate. I've done quite a few of this model transmission and its almost always the valve body problem. HOWEVER FIRST CHECK YOUR FLUID CONDITION, if the fluid is good and there isn't a large amount of debris in the pan you should try to either get a new valve body or have your rebuilt with the parts from sonnax that eliminate these hard shift problems.
