It may, depending oln the temperature of the engine. A cool night could bring engine temp down low enough to require some pre heat, for example.

SOURCE: 1995 ford 7.3 litre diesel glow plugs

the best way i have found to test glow plugs is to disconnect the wire to the plug and get you 12volt test light and put your negitive lead of the test light on the positive battery cable so when you touch the test light to any ground the light will light. so now go check your glow plugs and if you have one that doesnt light the light its burned out.
good luck

SOURCE: Problem with cold starting Ford 7.3L Diesel at > freezing temps

most likely the relay. its located to the left of the fuel filter( looking at the motor from the front). my experience is that they only last about 50,000 miles. the part costs about $20 at an navistar dealer. remove the cowl over the filter, disconnect the batteries(so you don't short the new relay out if you cross the polarity with a wrench) ,remove the four wires from the ceramic relay, un-fasten the relay from the base. reverse the process with the new relay. CAUTION; do not over-tighten the nuts on the wire studs, you could crack the ceramic relay.(iv'e done it) . hope this helps

SOURCE: 2000 ford super duty 7.3 diesel will not cold start

you need to have the engine coolant switch checked, since the computer relies solely on sensors, the ect tells the computer how cold or hot it is so the computer will make it a rich or lean mixture to start the engine,if it tells the computer that it is 75 degrees the computer will lean the mixture like starting a car in the winter without a choke.

Yessir.
In the old days, because of the ambient temperature's effect on the crankcase oil and the diesel fuel, often two batteries were used to state the diesel in cold weather.
You might see if there is room for an additional battery on the opposite side of the vehicle from the one that is installed now.
The additional battery can be wired parallel with the one already there, which will not increase the voltage, only the starting amps.
I have done this before, several times.
Another choice is an engine heater, which either screws into the block or is installed inside a radiator hose that has been modified for this purpose.
The cord then is plugged in to an outside 110 volt source, and that will heat the motor oil to ease starting.
God bless your efforts.

I got a jeep wrangler unlimited 2008, glow plug indicator light shows up when the engine is cold but after it has run for sometimes and the engine

Sounds like a diesel. Glow plugs usually need to be warmed up before starting an engine. Smaller diesels either warm up quicker or it is less critical than a tractor trailer. So either your glow plug light is normal letting you know it needs time to warm up or it's letting you know they are weak and need to be replaced. I'd check the owners manual to be sure.

Glow plug light stays on for a long time

this will happen as it gets colder.. preheater needs to reach temperature before starting..in really cold weather we used to turn the key on and off a half dozen times in order to get these glowplugs really warm enough to start these diesel trucks..

Had 04 transit connect for 6 weeks. always started fine till week ago when turned cold. glow plug light only shows for about 1 second, replaced glow plugs but still the same. can only start every morning...

Sounds like the timer is bad. Since you have power when warm, the power relay must be giving the timer juice. The way it is suppose to work is you wait until the glow plug light goes out and then try to start. In cold weather it should take longer for the glow plug light to go out.

I have a 2008 ford kuga 2.0 tdci 4x4 when its below 5ºc it will not start i have pluged a snap on scanner in and has come up with a fuel pressure fault any ideas ?

Diesel fuel tends to be sluggish to pump in cold weather and that is why some diesel cars and trucks have heaters in the fuel tank to overcome this problem. However I tend to think that the glo-plugs are not working as they should be. Have them tested . The fuel pressure fault may be the inability of the pump to pump enough fuel to do the job.

This engine 'loves' glow plugs! One goes and the others try to handle the amps. Change them and you will have no probs! Other than that, I feel this is about the best diesel truck made!
