I have a 2001 buick park avenue with a 3.8L v6 that I replaced. I am having a problem finding out where the ground wires go. I try to start it and the starter doesn't engage and everything goes dark everytime. I know the starter is good. It is an electrical issue. I'm not sure if I have the starter connected properly. And there are 3 black colored wires with metal tips to screw them to something coming out of the same wire harness that I don't know where they go. Please help me.

Mostly after it has been fitted a while a wiring harness will adopt the "shape" of how it has been routed so when refitting after a repair it will usually drop more or less back into place so it is obvious where most of the connections are made. Usually clues such as the type and size of terminal and proximity. A process of elimination usually manages to find a home for most connections.

In the old days some trial and error was permissible but that is definitely not an option when the vehicle is fitted with electronics - it can be very expensive...

If you have doubt you should refer to a wiring diagram or take a look at a similar model.

If everything goes dark when you try to start the car, I agree that is likely an electrical issue, but I don't agree that it is necessarily related to the 3 ground wires. It could also be due to a loose connection to the battery or fuse block, or due to a weak or bad battery. Are the battery connections clean and tight? Have you tried charging the battery or using a jump start pack clamped on the battery cables directly?

Look for a bad coil pack. If you have the bank of three coils on the front passenger side of the motor, it is possible that one of them is going bad. This can be an intermittent problem since it failure is frequently heat related, and may not show up until the car is all heated up. It is simple enough to change one of these if you can figure out which one it is. There is a little device ( Spark detector) that can sense the sparks inside the wires. Get one and hold it close to each wire... away from the coils. The wire, that does not make the spark detector light up...is coming from the bad coil. (It is also possible that a spark plug wire is bad instead.) Good luck. Chip

SOURCE: '92 Park Avenue won't start or run.

When the Theft Deterrent Module (TDM), that is the core of the VATS system, cease to function, the security light could also stay off because it's the TDM itself that manage it. In my case that's what happened, the faulty TDM was recognizing the key, turning off the security light, activating the starter relay, but was not sending the fuel enable signal to the PCM.
There is a great write-up on how to completely bypass the TDM here: http://newrockies.ca/vatsbypass . This is what saved my car.

Does a flat tire keep my 2001 buick park avenue from starting?

Hello, I have one & they have sensors that tell the computer the tire is flat. Inflate & car should start. You could try removing the fuse for the sensore, see your owners manual for fuse box diagrams. Just suggestions.

Obviously you have some type of short in the power seat electrical system. Try checking the ground side of each switch with a multimeter. you should not have any current on the ground side of your switch unless the switch is activated. And look for chaffing or short circuits in the wires

Buick park avenue engine start problem

Try replacing the coolant control temp sensor, the one to the computer (usually it will have two wires), not the sensor to the temp light or gauge (usually has only one wire).
