Replaced driver side headlight with new bulb, still not working. Switched headlight bulbs, driver side still out, but new bulb works in passenger side socket. Checked fuses, all ok, and swaped relays, but light still out. Any ideas? Alco, cannot find under dash fuse box. Still looking.

Chapmnfarm: your head lights use a "2" fuse system.
one for the left and one for the right.
The fuse box you are looking for is under the hood on the passenger's side. It is a black box roughly 8 inches long and 4-5 inches wide. When you remove the cover, you will see fuses and relays. What you are looking for is the section in the box which has a cluster of 7 fuses. 3 in one row and 4 in the other. On the outer parameter are two relays. The fuses you are interested in are located in the row of 4 fuses, with the two closest to the "L" shaped part of the box. Both of those should be 15 amp fuses.
The fuse below those should be a 20 amp which is the lighting switch and the one below it is a 15 amp which is for the interior lights and the clock.
Check your harness grounds in the engine compartment near the area you have the problem. There are ground wires which come out of the harness on both sides of the core support. The wires are black in color and have "EYES" crimped onto the ends of the wires. Both of them will probably be located about 4-6 inches below the upper tie bar on each side of the radiator. Odds are that the eyes will be large enough to pass a 6mm bolt through.

I am having the same problem. It just happened out of the blue, i didn't change the bulb. The high beams work just fine, but the driver side low beam doesn't want to work. I checked the fuses, switched the relays and still can't get it to work.
mybunkey, you mentioned the ground wires coming out of the harness, what are you suggesting to do with those?
The headlight bulb shares a ground with the high beam bulb. Frequently when changing the headlight bulb, the ground is pulled off the high beam bulb. Check that the high beam bulb is OK, that the high beam bulb is properly seated, and that the terminals to the high beam bulb is on securely. They are different sizes so it is difficult to mix them up
Whether they become damaged in an accident or simply burn out over time, your Subaru Outback's headlights may eventually need to be replaced. Fortunately, once you've purchased the right replacement bulb for your model year, performing the repair yourself is relatively easy. These instructions only apply to Outback models made after 2000.
Undo the clips on the air intake ducts using a screwdriver and remove the duct from the engine compartment (driver's side bulb removal only.)
Loosen the secured clip on the washer tank with a screwdriver and slide the tank horizontally to allow easier access to the headlight assembly (passenger's side bulb removal only.)
Turn the bulb cover counterclockwise and remove it from the assembly.
Disconnect the headlight electrical connector and undo the assembly retaining spring.
Pull the old bulb directly out of the socket and replace it with the new one. Press the retaining spring back into place and reattach the electrical connector.
Replace the bulb cover, and then turn on the engine. Test the new headlight to make sure it works before replacing the air intake duct or the washer tank and closing the hood.

Test the new headlight to make sure it works before replacing the air intake duct or the washer tank and closing the hood.

I have a 2001 Subrau Impreza outback sport. My passenger side headlight is very dim on both high and low. I switched bulbs but its still dim on passengers side. I checked all fuses twice and stil have the same problem. what is going on with this car!!
Your answer below (3) was exactly what I needed. I too replaced my bulb, and connector(which caused the problem)but still had no left headlight. Trying to find out where the fuse was, I ran across your post. Excellent help!!!!
