SOURCE: EXHAUST LEAK INTO COOLING SYSTEM?
i assume its a 4 cyl?? will this car ever overheat if just sitting idle? when it begins to overheat, hows the heat in the cab? sounds like maybe the radiator is partially clogged or restricted somehow. i would change the radiator cap and make sure the overflow is set to proper level. (incl. radiator level) i wouldnt jump to headgasket just yet, they are pretty durable from what ive seen
SOURCE: white smoke or steam coming out of exhaust pipe,
Its funny that everyone has solved the problem without any answers to critical questions. In this case, everyone is right and everyone is wrong. ONLY careful testing and observation will determine if there is an actual problem. I do not solve problems just to be first. Even in a hands-on situation I refuse to jump to conclusions before testing, otherwise you run the risk of at best, "chasing your tail" or at worst, tearing into a perfectly good engine to prove nothing!!!
Happy New Year!!!!

Yes, you can, but not exactly recommended. If you are going to go that deep into it, then might as well do everything else. However, being unemployed tends to have a negative impact on the wallet....
I suspect it is more than just rings. I think that the walls have been scored badly as well. You may be able to use a borescope to take a peak into the cylinder through spark plug hole. Move the piston to bottom of stroke, and see what you can see. If scarred, much work will be needed. If hatches look alright, then you might be able to get away with just rings.
What kind of compression are you getting on #1 vs #2? This also might be a blown headgasket into an oil passage, or the head (perhaps block?) is ever so slightly warped in this area.
