It started when it was extremely cold out but is taking longer and longer to "switch" over. seems to be a condition of engine temp/coolant temp.
The transmission will NOT shift into the final gear (overdrive) when the coolant temperature is below 177 degrees F. The OD is coolant temperature controlled. In short, the colder it is outside, the colder the engine is, and takes longer to warm up to operating temperature. The coolant, when it reaches 177 degrees F, satisfies the temperature sensor, which allows the final shift. Assuming that you do not have a thermostat that is stuck slightly open, this is a normal occurance. Thanks for choosing FixYa for assistance.

It was extremelly helpful. knowing this I will test the sensor, because it is acting very different then the car has acted in the past 5 winters. the sensor may have shifted a bit.
