My the metal on the starter where the fly wheel engages was worn down.The problem was when I pressed the clutch I could hear the metal scraping aginist the starter.this happens each time I pressed the clutch when starting ir changing gears.I have a 2001 ford escortzx. Had the sterted checked and it was fine but had to replace due to worn metal.Why does the starter grind against the fly wheel or vise verser when engaging the clutch. Had starter checked and it was good but metal was worn from hitting against flywheel.I have a 5 speed manual transmission.
There is no way the ring gear will hit the starter pinion unless the fly wheel bolts on the crank shaft or loose allowing the flywheel to run out of true. If you have had clutch/ rear seal work done lately the fly wheel will only fit in one position and if that was ignored at some time then the fly wheel will run out and touch the starter pinion.. I would also check the adjustment on the starter pinion as it has to be set by the lever pivot to a correct distance or it will touch the teeth of the ring gear

Are you able to remove the trans inspection plate so you can look at the starter as its being engaged?You may be able to see what its doing and wether its the right starter if your starter has two terminals have you put the solenoid wire on the wrong terminal?This would have been easier if you had the original as you could have placed them side by side and compared them and counted the amount of gear teeth

If you throw booser cables on does the car start ? If it doesnt then its time to replace your starter and relay.

Hello, I would make sure that your car is not one of those half year cars becuase two differn't starters may be offered for the same year of car. Also, I would check and see if your battery has enough CCA's to power your system. The only other thing is to turn your crankshaft with a breaker bar to turn your flywheel to possibly get a fresh area of teeth on it. If none of this fails it's as simple as just replacing the flywheel. If you did a bench test on the starter and the bendix engaged that is good. Buying parts from an Auto parts store does not gurantee the part is good and that the bendix engages the full distance to turn the flywheel. I would try to find a mechanic who rebuilds starters to make sure that the bendix is engaging fully. I hope this helps you!

sounds like a clutch problem to me thrust bearing and pressure plate problem all so make sure flywheel is tight when you replace this hope this help
