Check that the body ground to tank is clean and tight. That's about the only thing that will cause this. Sending unit is good because the gage moves. Gage is good because it is working. Improperly, but it moves. It's getting power because it's moving. Only thing left is a faulty ground connection.

Fuel Gage
The IPC displays the fuel level as determined by the PCM. The IPC receives a class 2 message from the PCM indicating the fuel level percent. The fuel gage defaults to empty if:
• The PCM detects a malfunction in the fuel level sensor circuit.
• The IPC detects a loss of class 2 communications with the PCM.
When the fuel level is less than a pre-determined value, the low fuel indicator illuminates.

Hooking up a professional or factory scanner an checking input data to the PCM from the sending unit inside the fuel tank ,viewing the information sent to the IPC , Checking for diagnostic trouble code's .
DTC P0461
DTC P0462
Circuit Description
The fuel level sender changes resistance based on fuel level. The PCM monitors the signal circuit of the fuel level sender in order to determine fuel level. When the fuel tank is full, the sender resistance is high and the PCM senses a high signal voltage. When the fuel tank is empty, the sender resistance is low and the PCM senses a low signal voltage. The PCM uses the signal circuit of the fuel level sender in order to calculate the total remaining fuel percentage in the tank. The PCM sends the fuel level percent via the class 2 serial data circuit to the instrument cluster in order to control the fuel gage. The fuel level information is also used for misfire and EVAP diagnostics.

Install a scan tool.
Turn the ignition ON, with the engine OFF.
With a scan tool, observe the Fuel Tank Level Remaining parameter in the PCM data list.
Does the scan tool indicate that the Fuel Tank Level Remaining parameter is less than the specified value?

No DTC'S - diagnostic trouble code's stored ,use this diagnostic procedure
Fuel Gage Inaccurate or Inoperative
• Refer to Fuel Level Specifications in order to verify the correct fuel level sensor readings. The Fuel Tank Level Remaining parameter is available in the scan tool in the PCM data list.
Test Description
The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.
This step tests for a high resistance in the signal circuit and the low reference circuit of the fuel level sensor.
DTCs will be set in the PCM when you perform this diagnostic table.

Connect the J 33431-C Signal Generator and Instrument Panel Tester between the signal circuit of the fuel level sensor and the low reference circuit of the fuel level sensor on the male terminal side.
Turn the ignition ON, with the engine OFF.
Important: Verify the J 33431-C resistance settings with a DMM.
Vary the resistance on the J 33431-C from 40-250 ohms.
Refer to Fuel Level Specifications in order to convert from resistance to fuel gage display.
Does the fuel gage display the correct fuel level?

SOURCE: Gas gauge not working

Hi,
This sounds like the sender unit in the fuel tank is worn or possibly a corroded/ bad earth from the unit itself.
There should be an inspection plate above the fuel tank removal of this should reveal the sender unit and connections, if not can you see on top of it? make sure all connections are clean and not gunged up with corrosion. Try spraying Wd40 or similar around the area whilst wiggling the plugs/wires.
Good Luck, Please press the Blue Button to appraise my FREE! Effort.
Thank You!

SOURCE: I have a 1997 Chevy Blazer LS, the fuel gauge

all later model chevy vehicles are plagued with this problem it,s the fuel level sensor mounted on the fuel pump module inside fuel tank unfortunately on some models it,s only available with purchase of whole new fuel pump module that can run as much as $500.00 dollars for just the module not including labor to drop fuel tank and replace I encourage you not to waste time and money with aftermarket less expensive pump module assemblies not to knock any parts people but our shop just installed the 3rd napa fuel pump module in a 98 blazer because the new pump will not read correct amount of fuel finally it was replaced by a pump module assemblie from dealership at cost of $458.00 for pump it now reads correct hope this helps if you need more detailed instructions on how to replace repost at fix ya thanks

How does the gas gauge work on a 1985 Cadillac el dorado

On them older cars (and maybe still to some extent) they had a tiny voltage regulator on the instrument cluster board, just before the gas gauge and the temperature gauge. It cut the voltage going through those two gauges to about 5-7volts, before sending the signal out to the sending units.
For the in-tank sending unit, it had about 5 volts current running from the dash to the sending unit. The float on the sending unit attaches to a "variable resistor", and then goes to ground. What the dash gauge measures is the "resistance to ground", and is thus translated to the needle on the gauge showing anywhere from empty to full. Pretty neat, huh?
So if you are working on the gas gauge, you would check for that small voltage at the fuel tank electrical connector. Folks used to test whether the gauge or the sending unit was the problem by taking the wire at the tank and just temporarily grounding the wire to a ground, a clean metal piece of the frame down there. If it caused the needle to move AT ALL, then you would know that the problem is not the dash gauge, but the sending unit in the tank. Get a helper to watch the needle while you ground it. Careful not to let it ground too long-you can damage the gauge or voltage regulator. You just want to touch it to a clean piece of the frame while someone watches for needle movement-even just a little movement. Often this test would cause the needle to jump to full, or maybe just halfway, but any movement of the gauge needle means the gauge is okay. For this test, the ignition key must be on (not start, not engine running, just key in on).
The variable resistor on the sending unit is a little flimsy, and easily disrupted-that is why so many failed. A new one should not be very expensive-it is all one piece. You don't buy a separate resistor, you just buy the whole apparatus with the float and arm attached.
Probably 80-90% of the time, when the gas gauge stopped working, it was the sending unit, not the gauge itself.

What would cause temperature gauge bouncing ?

Sounds like the sending unit has an intermittent short to ground. Unhook the the wire from the sending unit, and see if the needle stops jumping around. If it quits jumping around, replace the sending unit. If it still jumps around, you have a bare spot somewhere on the wire and it is hitting ground which will cause the needle to jump. Cut out the bad part of the wire and splice in a new section. That should fix it.

What's the easiest way to change the spark plugs and my gas gauge bounces around alot it goes from full to empty. my 4wheel drive wont engage either

jack it up, use jack stands. take off the front wheels, and go in through the wheel well to get to the spark plugs. Gas gauges on every blazer is freaking crazy. mine acts up when it`s at a 1/4 tank. Park up hill it shows more, park down hill, it shows empty.

To much trouble to replace, unless you have the time and money to replce the sending unit.

Troubleshooting non-functioning gas gauge on 2002 Blazer 2-door

Sure there is!

DO THIS FIRST!!!
When you turn the key on, and the gauges and warning lights come to life, does the needle on the fuel gauge move a tiny bit? It should. If it does move a hair, this is a good sign your gauge is still good. If not, keep reading.

The gauges themselves are usually not at fault, but they can fail, of course. Usually, it's the sender or float that's the culprit. The assembly resides in the fuel tank in the module or unit that houses your fuel pump. Many customers (when faced with the cost of this tank job) will opt for waiting until the fuel pump goes bad, and replacing pump and sending unit together. However, there are obvious drawbacks to this!

ONE test you could do if you are good at driveway car work is this: Crawl under vehicle and find the bundle of wires (not tubes or lines) that goes up to the top of the fuel tank. Sometimes you can reach it through the rear wheel well. Follow this small group of wires up to wherever it plugs in to the pigtail coming out of the tank. THis could be on top of tank, or just outside the perimeter of the tank. Unplug this connection. Using a common 12 volt test lamp probe, ground the test lamp, turn the key to the "ON" position so dash lights up, and touch tester to each wire tip on the end not connected to the tank (engine side of wire harness.) Have someone watch the fuel gauge as you touch the leads one by one. The gauge should move when one of these is grounded thru the lite. Total deflection of the needle means your sender is at fault, not the gauge. BUt it's usually the sender, anyway. THey're cheap enough, but the labor on a tank job can vary from place to place.

Good luck, TT

99' blazer gas gauge eratic

I have the same problem on my 99 ZR2 Blazer. This is the rheostat in the gas tank. I bought my part in Ebay for $27. The only issue is that you have to drop the gas tank and pull the sending unit to install. Hope this helps, I hear from other message boards that it is a very common problem in these vehicles.

Two Things: Wipers randomly don't work at all, or go too long and fuel gauge not working.

Hi chuck. I red your problem.
I anderstand your problem is electrical.

OK.On Chevy wiper motors have a defect " I called"
But the problem is the Wiper module or Wiper board,
That goes inside of the wiper motor. it's cost on dealer about $ 40 or around 20 to 35 on Autoparts.
Is easy to replace it. no need to take out the wiper motor.
Just remove the little torx screw on the black tap and take out
You will see the module.
I hope this work for you.
