A new engine was put in a 2005 dodge stratus, don't know if it was the same as the original, where on the block is the engine id? I'm also getting a code po135 on the car. The o2 sensor on the exhaust was replaced twice, could it be the o2 sensor after the catalytic converter?

The cat is located just off of the exhaust manifold. You have to remove things to get out of the way. Loosen down pipe to converter and unclamp the converter and it should pull right out. Use a good penetrating oil to help loosen the down pipe bolts.

SOURCE: Cavalier blowing out black smoke car idles fairly well considerin
Black smoke is usually unburned fuel. P0171 reads bank 1 system too lean. There isn't one answer. You need to dig further and inspect your cars fuel system, from the pump to the injectors. Because of the mileage you may want to start off with a compression test just to see where you stand with the motor. write back if you have any other questions.

you bypassed the wires that connect to the sensors? that would have been my first guess the harness that plugs into the sensor. after that i would check the ground connection from the ecm. wouldn't hurt to check the battery posts too. if the battery posts are oxidized you can have all kinds of goofy electrical problems. hope that helps.
