93 Jeep Grand Cherokee all wheel drive transmission,fluid level good, driving at65 mph and found drive,first,and second didn't work,no hint before. On stopping reverse worked. towed with rear wheels in motion for 15 Mi. Tested again and all works normally. No long test drive yet. 200,000 plus mi., not used much for seven years, used fair amount this last year. Mysterious?
I thought my trans was going out . It would shift fine then it would stop working . Trans shop said it shifted to good to be anything wrong with it . I got mad an over filed it an it worked like a new one . I finally discovered it had the wrong dipstick in it .

Any all wheel drive will give less fuel miles.(compared to ones you engage as needed) The Chrysler v8 is a time proven engine, pretty much a copycat of a chevy with some changes to make it their own. Overall, I haven't heard any really bad stuff about them. If you look at the problems on this site, there seem to be fewer jeep probs than all other vehicles. (even though some problems are really weird!!!)
What you really need to see is the vehicles history to make sure it's been maintained and has not been back to a shop for the same thing over and over.

sounds to me like the transfer case clutches are worn out. also the fluid could be low or dirty. try draining and refilling the transfercase with clean fluid. if it is still not working after driving it around for a few miles then you may need to replace or overhaul your transfercase

No, not with out a lot of work. Electronics are most likely different on the 2 also.

You can check fluid level by removing the rubber plug in the cover. Fluid is full when on level ground, it is just at the edge of the hole (or very close) if you are already getting noises out of there, you can remove the cover and inspect gears for wear or breakage. If you find a large amount of metal debris in the lube it tells you something bad is going on back there. Although rebuildable, it's not a home job...requires exact settings in order to operate properly. You can find good units far cheaper than even a gearset costs in any scrapyard. to match ratio, count the teeth on the ring gear and the pinion gear. the replacement MUST have the exact same number. Before swapping diffs, check all back there to make sure noise is not from somewhere else.

This unfortunately is a very common problem. The display units in these Jeeps are very reliable and they fail with age. You will have to find an automotive electronics shop that can repair the unit or find one in the salvage yard that may work still. They all go out with age its just a matter of when. The electrical connections inside get weak with years of vibration and they short out and fail. A new one from Chrysler will set you back about 450 bucks if they are still available.
