SOURCE: automatic gearshift stuck in park

The release for the shifter is tied to the brake lites, check to see if the brake lights work, if they don't then test the brake light switch at the top of the brake pedal, if it lights a test lite when you press the brake it is ok, in that case you need to check the little solenoid that pulls the cable to unlock the shifter, it is bolted to the top of the steering column, in order to get at it you will have to unbolt the column and drop it dow.

SOURCE: gear shift of f-150 is locked in park. The truck

Is the CHMSL ( Center High Mount Stop Lamp ) working ?
Is it a regular bulb, or did it get changed to a LED ?
If it is a functioning factory type bulb, the shift interlock solenoid is the cause.
Until you can fix the CHMSL or the shift interlock, you can turn the key to the run position ( do not start ), press and hold the brake pedal, shift into neutral, and then start the truck.
Your MY the shift interlock circuit and the brake lamp circuit are the same.
Usually the shift interlock stops working when the brake lamp fuse is blown, or if the bulbs are out ( truck does not see a load on the circuit ).
If LED tail lamps were installed without load resistors, the shift interlock circuit will not work ( looks like a burnt out brake lamp bulb )

SOURCE: I have 2004 Ford F150

as a safety precaution today's vehicles are not supposed to shift out of park until brake pedal is depressed. usually it is one of two things that might cause your dilema, 1- you have a bad brake light switch and truck does not release shifter since it does not recognize you brake pedal as being pushed or 2- a bad shift interlock switch. make sure your brake lights work if they are orerational than most likely you have a bad shift interlock switch, not an uncommon problem. if this was helpful please leave positive rating.

When I turn the ignition switch on I often cannot get the stick shift to come out of Park. If I shift it out quickly it will often work but if I leave it to idle in Park for more than a few seconds it jams...

The ability to release the shifter from the Park position depends on the brake switch. You have to put your foot on the brake to take it out of park. You may have an problem with your brake lights as well. Have a friend look at your brake lights the whole time you have the pedal depressed and make sure they stay on. If they go off then the signal to release from park is stopping also.

Ford f150 shifter

Some year models have a electric lock on the brake pedal lever under the dash. Usually you can check it by pressing the brake pedal and observing the brake lights. If you lose this signal, the shift lever will not move from Park.

There can also be a shift rod inside the steering column which is linked to the ignition key. The shift rod can also be affected by the brake pedal switch failing to release the selector from Park. All 3 parts, ignition shift rod, brake pedal switch, and transmission release are adjusted together. Meaning if 1 does not work, the other 2 can be affected.

Ignition key stuck in 2003 Grand Prix

If you have an auto trans, check to make sure the car is in park. If the shift lever is even slightly misaligned, (even though the indicator says PARK) your key won't come out.
Try spraying the tumbler with powdered graphite.
It is a common problem, and I found two possible answers. The ignition plunger in the ignition switch or the Park release solenoid located in the center console. I've heard that when the solenoid sticks it prevents your key from being released. I have not fixed mine yet, I just use the inside of a ball point pen to release the plunger by sticking it in the access hole under the ignition.

Gear stick stuck!

Are you pressing down on the brake padle when you are trying to get it out of park? If that don't work check the fuses & there may be a relay that's may be related to a safty divice to the stick shift. If you don't press the brake padle the stick shift will not release so if you leave the car running a child could not push in gear. The lock silinoid is at the gear console
