GM vehicles don't use "GEM" computers. That's a Ford term. If you're looking for the body control module, for your vehicle, it's below the front center floor console.
It appears that you have a bad head gasket and that has caused a spark plug to not fire. That means that gas vapor is going through the engine and out the exhaust. This is not going to be cheap to repair.
I have the same problem with my 04 v6 awd vue. The issue i see is with the transmission torque converter going in and out of lockup consistently. I have noticed when i engage cruise control this problem goes away for the most part. Today i turned on cruise at 30 miles per hour after noticing the rpm fluctuation about 400 rpm. change to only about 100 rpm. This has been an issue scene day one from the dealer. no codes, the transmission has not failed nor the torque converter. I think it is an issue with the drive by wire system. when you engage cruise control the foot throttle position sensor is out of the equation. This is my best guess, you can take it with a grain of salt.
Have you checked your wheel bearings? When these go out you can get a harsh grinding noise. This sounds like that is what it might be. Does it happen when you are going fast/slow turning/going straight? I know you said it's inconsistent but the more info the better. However, if I had to bet, based on what you have already said, it's your wheel bearings. Let me know if you have further questions. Thanks for using FixYa!
No is not hard all you need to do is remove the tire and it haves four bolt on the back. one is kind of hard to take out do to not much space to work with.
