While you're trying to start the car, have someone bang on the starter, under the car, not too hard. This will usually un-jam the pinion gear and it will turn over.
I had to do that and it worked great. Then i Just washed the tip of the pinion gear in a cleaner and it's worked now for 15 years.

My Taurus wagon had same thing once. It was a TFI sensor(for fuel injector's) on the outside of the distributer. Maybe you have something similar on the Honda. Could be timing belt also. Engine won't engage if it does not have a belt or chain in tact. Toyota Rav 4 had that. Did same thing you describe.

1998 C200 elegance auto, will not crank the engine over just makes clunk.

Could be a defective battery, bad solenoid, or even bad ignition switch. When I was fixing cars, I always replaced the solenoid when I replaced the starter, but your mechanic might not have.

1999 Pontiac Sunfire 5 speed won't start. Replaced spark plugs and checked ignition coil (fine). Sounds like it wants to turn over but makes a "whining" noise. Please assist. Thank you!

Is the engine turning over with the key in the start position? If the engine is not spinning over and you hear a whining noise, the starter is not engaging the flywheel. If the engine is turning over with the starter engaged, the engine has most likely jumped time that creates low or no compression which results in the whining noise.

Replace starter

two things can happen
first the starter will spin but don't trow the Bendix (shaft) to engage with the flex plate
second flex plate have worn spot and the starter spin on dead spot
turn the engine with hand little and start again.
if the starter work normal the engine will turn.
if nothing happen the starter is bad

I've had my ignition replaced and my starter twice in one month whats wrong

Your flywheel may be damaged. The starter drive engages the flywheel to spin the engine. A bad ring gear or cracked flywheel will make noises you described and is ******* starters. Rebuilt starters are not always good.

Engine will not crank, battery and starter have both been tested and pass, hear a high pitched spinning noise when turning the key over

The high pitched spinning sound you hear is the starter bendex trying to engage the flywheel. The starter may check out ok, but the bendex is turning but coming out. The starter will need replaced.

Just replaced a dead battery with a brand new one. Tried starting it and it makes a high pitch whining sound and wont start. Any suggestions of what the problem is? Does it need to sit to charge the...

The basics, your battery is used to provide power to the starter. Once the engine is running the alternator then provides current to recharge the battery and run all of your electrical components. so I would suspect the starter is not working to start the engine.

Replaced starter still makes grinding noise..what could it be..

Chances are, the flywheel ring gear is damaged and the new starter drive gear just doesn't have enough to engage into so it spins and makes a grinding noise. If you can, try and turn the engine over a tiny bit by hand and then try the starter. If this allows the engine to turn over and start, this is probably your problem. Unfortunately, most engines come to a rest in the same spot(s) when you shut them off so the starter always has to try and engage in the worn area. The fix involves removing the transmission and replacing the ring gear...a big job.

Making a hair dryer noise when started, having trouble starting, and check engine light is on.

Sounds like the bindex on the starter is out. This means that the starter will spin but it dosent make contact with the flywheel to turn the engine over. You probley need a new starter.

Starter makes weird noise dosent turn over

Starter drive not engaging fully . Sticky or worn, but don't think changing thermostat had anything to do with it. Try having starter drive inspected & lubed if possible , but you may end up with new starter.
