Your alternator has probably failed so you were running off your battery. when it ran out everything shuts down. Charge the battery, then start the car after you start it disconnect your battery if it dies your alternator is bad.

Won t start

run the fault codes and look for faulty cam/ crank position sensor as this is indicated by the backfire/hard start and lower idle RPM. Check that battery terminals are clean and tight..

1998 pontiac sunfire manual. Car starts but sputters and then dies and is completly dead but in the morning will start again and then die. I changed the coil pack but still the same. what can it be?

You can't do any testing, until you have a battery
that will take and hold a charge

Then you move on to testing the Alternator,then
Fuel Pressure & continue on with other testing

I have a 98 pontiac sunfire with a no start condition.when try to crank i have no security lights that would come with the key on. on the dash but the car will turn an crank for a few second then shut

Check fuel pressure loose stuff in tank can block sock in tank

Engine cranks 6 to 9 times before will start on my 1999 sunfire, 2.2litre. Has about 263,000 miles on it and runs smooth as silk after starting.

I would start with the fuelpump, put a gauge on the feul line then start car and shut down, then watch to see if preasure drops, you may have a bad pump that drains down after shut down, then take a while to build preasure back up, start with this test first. hope this helps.

I have a 1999 pontiac sunfire we have tired everything to get the car running again. it ran one minute we cut the wires running to the speedometer to wire a new plug to the back and now the car wont stay...

why did u cut speedo wirin--u need proper plug cable sold in store-one bad cylinder is a big strain specially on computer system--car cud start on fire

Try starting it with the shifter in neutral. You might have a bad
Neutral safety switch.

The battery may need to be replaced, the battery is not holding a charge or you didn't run car long enough. Try boosting again and let the car run for about 1/2 an hour to 1 hr. Then try to start the next day. If it doesn't start you will need a new battery. Even when you don't drive this vehicle especially in the winter time you should start this car and let it run for about 10 minutes once every week. Good Luck contact me if you need more help

HI.

Follow this step to keep running your sunfire.
1 - Be sure the battery is full charged.
2 - Is better if you put a battery charged
3 - Turn the key to run position and tray to start the car and leave with the key in run position,
With a watch let pass 10 minutes no less. you gonna see the security light flashing and stop flashing after 10 munites.
4 - After 10 munites turn the key to off position during 30 seconds, with watch on your hand, OK.
6-- After the 30 seconds try to star the car

Your car is equipped with a system called PASSKEY standard on all GM cars and light trucks, try the following procedure to reset the system, the battery being dead will trigger the system.

PASSKEY LOCKOUT RESET GM CARS 1999 UP
1) Put the key in the ignition and turn to the "ON" position. Leave it that way for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes turn the key and take it out. Repeat this process (2) more times (3 times, 30 minutes total) This should reset the passlock system to recognize your key.

Get a fuel pressure gauge and turn the key on but don't start it and check your readings.
