Is Check engine light on? If so you need to have a OBDII/EOBD test ran for code identification.

That should be available in a shop manual which is available on Ebay, or from websites like alldata for a fee.

Do you have a check engine light? Which engine? My 1996 Trooper with a 3.2 D.O.H.C. is awful for plugging up the E.G.R. I have cleaned it several times! Good Luck!

Do you also have Bearing problums, ODD electrical issues that fix there self sometimes?

Classic frame ground issue.

To test start motor turn on head lamp and put a volt meeter between ground on engine and frame if you get any reading add a frame ground between Battery neg and body.

With out a solid Frame path of electricity is trough engine to trans to drive line then finally to the drive Axel which is grounded.

You need to get the transmission serviced. Either the Filter is clogged or something has worn out and needs to be repaired.

The 1998 Isuzu Trooper is identical to the 1996 & 1997 Troopers with the 3.2L V6 motor. Chilton-Haynes have a decnet and detailed manual for this car. It's available on Amazon.com. That's where I got mine!

If its the 3.0 diesel it could be the rail oil pressure sensor starting to pack up .

Its a mechanical problem related to transmission.You should start from there.
